Default BROKEN!: Rear hatch plate (the one w/ hatch button and logo)

Yea so uh... one day my hatch was pretty much frozen shut i pulled on it kinda hard, and the plastic thing came loose.

Im referring to the plate above the license, below the 3rd brake light, that has the scion logo and hatch open button on it. That whole assembly has completely broken off today.

Will it be covered under warranty? I mean, i didn't try prying it open, it just snapped at the first try i wanted to pull the hatch up, knowing it would take a little more force than usual (since it was real cold out and i had trouble opening my door). Shouldn't Scion have made that part, being a part that would need to support upward pull of the hatch and the hatch itself under frozen conditions, able to withstand that sorta force? or am i just unlucky...?

After getting it replaced, i'll definitely be careful with it. Dont let what happened to me, happen to you!

Yea! good ideas.

And yea, I've gotten the feeling that part is pretty delicate. I mean, it creaks when you pull/push on it, or when you park the car in the sun (you can hear the plastic expanding slowly). Heck, you can even hear it from inside the car sometimes.

Dang, I never knew it could break easily. Right now I'm in NY and its 8 degrees outside but I can open my hatch gate easily but the gas shock isnt strong cuz its toooo cold but it stays up when I push it all the way.... I don't really trust it tho.

My hatch broke last weekend too!!! I was just on here looking to see if the same thing has happened to anyone else.

It was -15 when mine broke, i had to go buy rope and drive home for 4 hours listening to it rattle over every bump i hit. and watch that annoying "doors open" light go on and off.

I'm getting it fixed soon, i hope its under warranty or...cheap to fix.... :-/

Are you guys pulling on the plastic part itself? When I get into the hatch I just use my finger tips on the button underneath the plastic to lift up.

same thing happened to me. scion dealers call it a garnish trunk cover. it costs 125.xx to replace it and it comes painted in your color. i've looked for a cheaper replacement such as CF but nothing else came close.

get the replacement from the dealer.

its a little flimsy peice of plastic that can break if you're trying to open the hatch too hard. usually this means the hatch struts are broken too if its not opening by itself.

i would replace the struts as well.

My struts are fine, it's the weather stripping that sometimes causes trouble. It seems to stick to itself if I haven't opened the hatch in a while.

Yeah. Exact same thing happened to me this morning. Poor design by Toyota...So I'm on a treasure hunt for the CF garnish :D

Even the guy at the dealership said he's seen over 20 of them pop/crack off.

Oh well.

Let me guess it was your right hand? Are you single? Need to lay off beating the meat loooll jk..

Take it to the dealer give it a shot, if they will cover it under warranty or not. Worst case you can look on ebay for a white garnish, and replace it yourself its pretty easy. Another tip grab some degreaser and clean the trunk seals, and then you can use armor oil to help keep the rubber soft
