hey did any of you do the diy with pictures, because i would like to do this a.s.a.p! and a link to the 20" wide leds would be great too. thank you

sorry, I didn't take any pics other then one you you see on here. The lense is 21.5 in, if you use the just the strips end to end you'll have a gap on each side. If you do it like I did keeping the original lights and cutting the strips down to fit on each side it will light up the whole strip like you see in the pic.

The strips come from pepboys

steps

1. Remove the white trim from the hatch first then the black trim by pulling down on the trim gently. (note: there are some clips hidden so just watch or they will break off)

2. unbolt the the lense and the piece of hatch that has the scion emblem using a 10mm socket and remove the metal bracket.

3. Unplug the harness from the lense, pull off the trim with the scion logo, next from inside the hatch push out the lense. (note: this will be tough because the weather stripping holds tight to the car just go slow and pry up the weather stripping).

4. Using pliers grab onto the ends of the gray part of the lense and lightly twist it, the lense will start to separate, work your way down and repeat this on the other end.

5. (Skip to step 6 if your leave the original lights) remove the leds from the plastic by cutting the wires and putting prying the leds up and out.

6. Center the strips in the middle if your replacing the whole thing and mark the end of the plastic where the strips end. / Cut the strips down to size to fit on each end.

7. Remove the backing off of the tape on the strips and install them at either the line you made in the last step or next to the originals.

8. Reassemble the lense by lining up the plastic piece where you see the original glue. apply a dab of adhesive along the edge and press the pieces together. tap the section until they dry.

9. Now the fun part take your wires and strip the ends of the strips. twist the wires with the white stripe (positive) together then the plain black (ground). from the original plug green is positive white is ground. t taps the wires together.

10. Test to make sure they light, wedge something onto the brake pedal for have someone step on the pedal.

11. If all is well reverse the disassembly steps above and reinstall everything

very nice :) haha like many others, first thing i thought "wow thats awesome but totally illegal"

still, though, awesome setup, and guide.

fishingexpert87 01-23-2006 10:02 PM

nice! could you send me the link to where you bought the leds?
wat kind of glue did you use to put it back? and where is the white trim u are talking about in the first step? dont we have to take the panel on the inside of the trunk or is that wat u r talking about?

sfusco 01-23-2006 10:11 PM

the strips are from pepboys, I used some silcone chalk from the hardware store, there are two sets of trim one has the pull down handles on it, the other is above that and runs along the sides of the hatch to cover the wires running to the lights. you have to remove the sides before the panel with the handles.

fishingexpert87 01-25-2006 01:39 PM

sorry for asking so many questions, but do you know what the name of the leds in pepboys are? o do you have a picture of the package? thank you

sfusco 01-25-2006 02:44 PM

i don't recall the manufacturer, I can describe it you to it says 15" strips and 10" strips, 2 of them come in a package, they have a "try me" button on the botton.
15" if you are not using the original lights. 10" if you leaving the original lights

PrettyniceB 01-25-2006 02:54 PM

fishingexpert87 01-25-2006 10:10 PM

woa woa woa, i remember once seeing those try me lights, they r small bulbs with two wires, i thought it would be a long strip that has a led on every inch or so.

sfusco 01-26-2006 03:37 AM

ok are those it? because i just bought it :) ok so i dissassemble everything like u said, and i unhook the plug of the new try me light and i strip the wires and connect it to the brake lights and im good right? :) OH nad when u said cut them to fit it, where can i cut the leds, because i dont want this thing not to work cuz its costly lol.

sfusco 01-27-2006 03:25 AM

those are them, you are right so far, you will see areas on the strips where there are lines that come together to a point, once you measure cut before this point.
