Default Daytime Running Lights. Conclusion: Waste of Time

I came up with two circuits that will give our tC a DRL function for the hi beams. I'm just not sure if I'm just wasting my time or not. I have HIDs too.

One is a DRL with 60% output power and the other one is also making the hi beams give off 60% but only at night time, should I call it NRL? I don't know which I would choose. Please help me.

I know they shorten the lifespan of the bulbs. I don't really care about that. :D

Conditions are as follows:

Option 1: DRL with 60% output power

a.) Engine off, ebrake up, low beams off, hi beams off = DRL off
b.) Engine on, ebrake up, low beams off, hi beams off = DRL off
c.) Engine on, ebrake down, low beams off, hi beams off = DRL on, hi beams "ON" at 60%
d.) Engine on, ebrake down, low beams on, hi beams off = DRL off
e.) Engine on, ebrake down, low beams on, hi beams on = DRL off, hi beams "ON" at 100%

Option 2: Hi beams "ON" together with low beams but only at 60% power at night (NRL)

a.) Engine off, low beams off, hi beams off = hi beams off
b.) Engine on, low beams off, hi beams off = hi beams off
c.) Engine on, low beams on, hi beams off = hi beams "ON" at 60%, low beams "ON" at 100%
d.) Engine on, low beams on, hi beams on = hi beams "ON" at 100%, low beams "ON" at 100%

Option 3: Install both Option 1 and Option 2

Option 4: Total waste of time!

Please help make this poll significant so that I would know if it's worth it or not.

Thanks guys! :D

It is easy. Just bunch of relays, wires and fuses. :D

Haha!

I'm making sure the circuit is safe and only rely on existing hardware for switching purposes and not the main power line. Everything hooks up straight to the battery.

But of course, comments are welcome. :D

Okay, so here are the circuits for this project. I just used a 25W bulb due to limitations in the software but I measured the voltage drop across the bulbs should be the same with 65W bulbs to give almost 60% power output.

I still need to find out if the tC has positive switching or negative switching for the circuit to work. I assumed the tC uses positive switching. I just did this over the weekend when I got bored. So I didn't put 100% dedication yet. :D

5-pin 12V 30A/40A SPST NONC Automotive Relay

Legend for the Circuit - Circuit Diagram equals one Relay

Option 1 Circuit - DRL

Option 2 Circuit - NRL

Option 3 Circuit - DRL + NRL

Please make some corrections if I ever missed something. I'll put up a DIY if most of the peeps here are interested. :D

Thanks!

i vote for the "waste of time" option. Just turn the low beams on lol.

meh, for drl's? that was always the first thing i disabled in every car ive owned since 96. leave your parking lights on and put in some fogs/led's. i guess in a way im drl'n it by leaving my parking light switch on 24/7 but i have led fogs and its just for show.. if its dark, i turn on my lights.. so i vote #4

I've already installed the LED fogs and they rock! Big props to magyver for the cool idea.

More input? it's still 50 - 50.

i vote #4 as well. if you do that that would mean youd have to realign your high beams, even at 50% just the slight glare can hit other drivers (im on Htechs and was following my bros Highlander... i could see my lights shining in his face on his side view... HE DOES IT TO ME ALL THE TIME so i thought itd be nice payback.. hahaa ). but if you can do this and you want DRLS you will be the first person ever that i know that wanted DRLS on his car.. lol but only more power to you

Actually, I just got bored last weekend. When I was on the road, I saw most cars have DRL set-ups installed. So I thought of making one for the tC. I didn't intend to put this project on top priority, and I would still like to seek your input to this idea. I just thought it'll be something interesting, but I guess it's not.

If glare is an issue, I could always lower the power to 30 - 40 percent to solve that matter. Like I said, I'm open for revisions and comments are welcome. :D

Very cool and original idea, and I love the multiple options for having them off/on. However, I think that DRL's are not very cool. I went to outstanding lengths to disable the DRL's in my dad's Touraeg. Still and all, very cool :D

Thanks for the input guys! So I'm leaning to trashing this project? :D
