Default folding side mirrors

Someone just hit my driver's side mirror off while the car was PARKED! ((to sum up a long story))

Anyone converted their side mirrors to a folding side mirrors? Anyone know how much that would cost? That would be something worth investing into my car.

He must have hit it with his mirror, cuz its hard to hit the mirror of someone elses car without hitting the car as well.

Ummm, are you gonna get the forward fold or backward fold mod? Either way, some idiot's gonna hit your mirror the wrong way and knock it off.

either way you can fold it yourself and minimize the chance of getting hit. that and i never seen forward fold mirrors.

That's why I park my car where it's all isolated and no one else parks

Because of the power mirror and the LED turn signals, I think a conversion would be pretty costly. you'd have to completely fabricate a new mirror piece and a new bracket too. Unless you park on a seriously busy seriously skinny street, it would probably be cheaper, in the long run, to just replace a couple mirrors. If there was a third party coming out with them, it might be worth it, but unless you're a whiz with custom fabrication, I don't know how it would happen.

Yea, that would be costly.
Side note, some mirrors fold both ways, but usually forward is only half way. I was backing up my MR2 in my grandparents garage (where I keep it) and they put the trash can next to my car, so I didn't fully notice it until my pass. side mirror caught it, I freaked out and pulled forward...and that's when I thanked Toyota engineers for thinking of making rear and front folding side view mirrors!

Yep - my 88 camry had folding mirrors but they weren't power so it was easier. I thought they only folded forward (toward the drivers window), but it turns out that if you push hard enough, they fold backward (toward the front of the car). I found that one out the hard way.

I got hit by a commercial ryder truck. So, only took my mirror off with the backside of his car, no damage to the body. I work in Boston and have to park on the street, so my chances are high it will happen again in the future.

Don't german cars have signal mirror and some of those fold. I wonder if i could use the housing on that and customize the black part that attaches it to the door so it stays. Probably not that simple.

If you could cannibalize a whole mirror assembly from one of those cars, I'm sure you could do something with the wiring to get the turn signals and the mirror to work, as long as they also used LEDs in the signal. the problem would be making it fit. It also might look kinda funny depending on the mirror. I think you would have to make a custom black part or at least part of a black part. Unless there is another car that just happens to have the same size part as ours, it's gonna be pretty darn hard.

I'm wondering if it will take the same amount of time to do that as it would get my new mirrors in. I should call a dealer for that part info.

It's available in stock, good, cuz I hear so many stories about parts taking forever. Now I got to battle it out with my insurance company. I still want to do the conversion though. Thank you for replying and sharing what you do know/think. BTW, a side mirror is about $200

Were any parts of the old one salvagable? I bet you could have some fun if any of the pieces are intact - if nothing else, you could practice modding on it.

i just saw her tC today, and the mirror is missing.. man it must be hard to drive without the drivers' side mirror. if you have connections, you can get the side mirror for $163. but still ask for $200 from the insurance.. hahaha. after the insurance stuff is done, take apart the led assembly so we can fool around with it alrighties tam?

I should get more than 200 with labor cost, maybe I can just order it myself and buy you dinner if you help me put the new one in. haha.

iowagary: Salvagable? The led assembly is ok. Now I can see how hard it would be to change the bulbs to a different color. I know other post already mention how annoying it would be to do it. Now I can see how it all works myself.
