Default hatch garnish problem - did i broke it?

Every time I open the hatch the garnish pops out just under the scion badge.

Of course popping it back is easy too but its annoying.

What is there? a plastic plug or something?

The back is held by 4 captive bolts which pass through the hatch. The center two have probably broken loose from the garnish. It's fixable (good old epoxy), but you'll need to take the garnish all the way off the car.

The bolts will likely be fine. The plastic tabs they're held by are probably broken.

What is the deal? I have never really heard of this til lately. I dont know of anyone in my area this has happened too. But If anyone needs a new one let me know I am trying to gbet rid of one. But yea there are 4 bolts tighten those and you should be good. Its not hard to do. Just remove the plastic pieces in the inside of the hatch. There are 2 screws you remove by the handles in used to close the hatch. Thats all you need to remove then pull.

mine does the same thing. It hasn't pulled all the way off yet lol but it will buckle out sometimes when I pull on it. So I just go in through the inside of the hatch? Same place I used to switch out the license plate lights by any chance?

open your hatch

on the inside there is two handle where you can pull your hatch down to close it. there is 1-1 screw each each side.

then pull the white/bone color plastic down, then pull the big black plastic down ( actually it will hold itself on the sides)
you will see 4 screws. get them off and pull the garnish out from the front. you dont need to take off the third brake lights.

do it in sunlight , because if you drop the plastic piece you will have a hard time to find it and glue it together....

mine broke off a while back, theres a lot of people who had the same problem. When you open the hatch just push the button but dont pull up on it. Pull up from the bottom of the hatch when u push the button.

Its cheap plastic.
Cost me over 100 bucks..

Yet another piece that I will be using Gorilla Glue on, first one was the tow hook cover on the front bumper.

ok... its done... i recommend to leave to rest the garnish glued together for 24 hours.. mine is really good now

ADVICE:
taking the hatch apart was easy! but to put it back together.... OMG... i broke my nail.. it was bleeding. etc

So.
first you have to put the big black plastic panel back
there is a few ( maybe 8? ) plastic plugs on this panel and another two plug at the corner ends which is a different type of plug than the rest of it.

so take that two out for now.
then take off that little part where you can install the lights for the license plate ( there is two.. take off the left one)
you need it to take it off to guide the middle plug to find the hole.

so first insert the plugs on the end closer to the seats.
then the sides then the end closer to the latch then the middle on.
i believe this is the best, easiest maybe the only way to put this panel back.... i was playing with it for 20 mins.. the mosquitoes eat my legs ....

i hope i could help you guys.

speaking of trunk garnish and poorly made pieces...

my trunk release button (the one you press to open the trunk under the garnish) is sticky and looks melted and nasty!

any clue as to why this would happen?

My guess as to why it happens is because of use. If you use your hatch too much, then yeah. the plastic is going to get weaker. that and scion cheapening out once again, lol.

I wouldnt say cheapening out. You get a car with tons of features for way less than you really would. This car comes complete for the price and you cant beat it.
