is there a standard light brightness that the headlights have to follow?
i got some 900 lumens LEDs that i want to install =p

Its true, on the new Lexus LS600h it has LED headlights, not HIDs or Halogens, they are LEDS!

 

are you confusing them for their DRLs...?
alot of car manufacturers are using LEDs in their headlights for daytime use... DRLs... not actual nighttime usage...

though there are very, very few (actually the LS600h is really the only car i know with actual LED headlamps), like mentioned above that have converted all over.

and YES, there are strict regulations on light output and requirements you need to meet on vehicle lamps.

yea.. the reason why not many car companies... or even personal individuals like myself have tried to make headlights out of LEDs... to the extent of usable light output (and thus also meeting the light requirements for DOT regulations)

is the fact that ALOT of money is involved.

to give you an example.. ONE... and i mean 1 of those LS600h headlights... the assembly and stuff..

costs between $3-5... GRAND.
(then again it has other crazy features added on as well... so yeah.. that ups the price quite a bit....) but geeeeez.

thinking that a pair of those headlights costs more than half of a tC.. oyyyyy

3-5 grand for $20 LEDs?

its probably the heatsink design thats going to be the most expensive. i'll try to do a demo to see what it looks like compared to the stock. thats if i do it.

 

heat sink, projector design, the dual-swivel adaptive lighting system.. blah blah blah...

well.. mostly the swivel system thingy too..

 

Something to think about. Even if you can match EXACTLY the light output of stock, its still illegal.

ANY ANY ANY modification to the stock lighting system or to the lense coloring or covering, is 100% illegal. Even different bulbs are illegal unless DOT approved bulbs are used.
ALL of the aftermarket headlights available (anzos and all) are illegal as well.

Just something to think about.

 

I thought if the headlights were DOT approved that they were OK to change.

 

They are, but the only DOT approved headlights are the stock ones. And the only DOT approved tailights are the TYCs and the stock ones.

And for bulbs, I stated DOT approved above. Not all the bulbs sold at autozone, walmart, online are DOT approved, I know syvania ones are and factory replacements are, but the others (like the HID replicas and all arent)
