heavy duty paint for chassis ? ( pix pg 2 )
I am looking for some heavy duty paint so that I can paint the parts of my suspension that I can not powdercoat. Mostly be used in the rear since I can powder most everything up front. I am also looking for some undercoating I can spray on the bottom of the car as well. any one know of any company that makes durable paint that will not chip away easily ? Also what would you recomend for an undercoat that is of high quality. Not talking bout stuff you get at shucks or auto zone. Something more durable than that. I am trying to achive a clean looking suspension and so it will protect better against rust. thanks.
Go to a local Rhino Lining dealer and see what they can do for you. That truck bed lining spray on stuff is amazing. I've seen a 67 Camaro body off restoration with that on everything and it looked amazing and will last longer than your car.
They can apply it in different thicknesses. If its just to prevent rust and keep a clean look, a minimal layer is needed. If you plan to off road (I hope not) then a thicker layer would be appropriate. Pound for pound, it's really not that heavy. The rubber glue in a can from Autozone probably weighs more. I've seen SCCA cars with the entire interior coated in the stuff. It presents a very very durable and aesthetically pleasing surface. The best part is that it's warrantied and is as flexible to work with as normal automotive paint. It's all in the prep work. Post some pics if you end up going that route. GL!
I got my car undercoated at the dealer. Doubt you would notice the weight especially if you just do the suspension parts. 3M make a rubberized spray but I have no clue if it is any good.
well I was planning on powdercoating
x2 front control arms
x2 steering knuckles
x2cross members
x2 swaybars
x4 brake calipers
all the brakets
parts that can not be powdercoated due to heat and bushings I can not replace.
rear control arms and trailing arms.
camber arms
and that lil housing for the rear wheel cylinders.
I would like to have it all painted and matching if I could. I guess I could rhino line the front control arms and cross member too and just powdercoat the rest.
but what about the rear wheel cylinder housing ( dont know whats its called) ? I could clean it but would really like to paint it or coat it if I could. The rhino lining is not baked right ?

I dont believe it is baked, it is just sprayed on. It is pretty amazing stuff, defiantly helps to protect everything. They have Line X too, dont know if they would be cheaper than rhino liner
They are the same basic thing. Just find out which dealer is closer to you and which one gives you the better deal. Like I said before, they can tape off any section of any part to keep from clogging/blocking maintenance areas. I'm sure on a job like this, they would prefer to have the parts uninstalled by you and brought to them for spraying. As for the undercarriage, they probably will put it up on a lift and tape off any areas that shouldn't be coated (e.g. exhaust, etc). As for your rear wheel cylinder housing, if you could clean and rattle can it, then they can rhino line it just as easily. Your biggest hurdle here is to remove the parts and deliver them to the shop instead of having them disassemble the pieces. I'm not sure they would be willing to do that. They do remove interiors in Jeeps to spray them though but as far as suspension and undercarriage components, I wouldn't trust a rhino lining company to get everything back in order properly.
No I plan on disassembling it myself. ( kinda the reason I am doing it. Had so much fun last time. ) I dont know what color scheme I should go with. I plan on powdercoating the following still :
Intercooler pipes
front and rear calipers
hotchkins sway bars
turbo compressor
valve cover ( currently Orange )
spark plug cover
all brackets underneath
wheels
and have the rest including the under carriage rhino lined,

That seems like a reasonable plan. All of those items will definitely benefit from a nice powder-coating. It is much harder and longer lasting than paint, which is especially important in high heat situations like turbo's, engines, and brakes. Just be sure to post some pics when you are done! I'm interested to see how well everything comes out!
oh I do plan on it man. I am planning on doing this before finishing my turbo set up and get to things one part at a time. The way I see it by the time I am done with it the car will be payed off and have really low miles. It will be clean enough to throw a set of baller wheels on it and win some shows, strong enough to take the abuse of some autocrossing and cruise nights. It is something I have not seen done yet either. thanks guys , rangerryda you seem to know your stuff when it comes to this so thanks. I will post up information of what the price will be for the rhino lining.
Anything I can do to help, just ask. I've seen a few show cars with turbo set-ups with painted piping but I don't think they would be able to take much abuse in regards to heat. Show cars are a whole different breed. Just like DJ08TC said, Line-X is the same stuff so if they have a dealer closer to you or offer you a better price, you won't be disappointed.
they told me today at the rhino line and line x place that they can not do suspension components. witch sucks. how bout that link i put on top do you think that stuff would work good or what ? anyone know of anything better ? thanks. I just want it to look sexy.

this one has a video attached. I am so confused.

It seems like that stuff is basically a hardened paint. This will work just fine for you. The Line-X was a simple and easy plan but I guess they don't want the liability. I live in Florida and inspect my chassis and suspension components regularly and I haven't noticed any rust. The dealership should have offered a 100k-lifetime chassis warranty against rust. This of course does not include aftermarket parts but it's something worth thinking about before spending all that hard earned cash. Just remember that any conductive metal can be powdercoated so as long as you remove it and supply them with the parts, there shouldn't be any issues like there was with the Line-X guys.
