I searched the 1000 HID posts and didn't see anything about this... I have a kit and the ballast went bad, can I buy a different brand ballast to replace it? Will the lights look a different color?

The color will not look different. Just buy the right type of igniter and connection and you will be ok.

ballasts are design to power up the bulbs. The bulbs themselves is what produces the different type of color.
When buying a bulb, you must buy both from the same manufacturers because they are so colorblind one 8000K may look pure white whereas another's 8,000K is pure blue.
Ballasts can be purchased from ANY manufacturer as long as you know what type of connection your bulbs use. I'm pretty sure they use AMP connectors
