twist 90 degrees and pull bulb back, the first time you change them it is a nightmare to get loose as it almost seems as if they had a spot of glue on them from factory or something, mine sucked to get out too.
yeah i figured thats what it may be, just bc its the first time changing them. it was the same with the dome and map lights when i switched them out with leds.
and i already read the manual, ty captain obvious! lol.
just didnt know if there was a trick or something.
guess i will try again.

hahaha this reminds me of when i tried to install my HIDs... I took out the high beam bulb and couldnt fit the HID bulb in the socket... I was flipping out. Finally my dad came out and was like "hey... iv been waching you trying to put the bulb in the wrong socket for about 30 min... thought you might like to know your messing with the high beam".
fail.
I don't know if this will work on the tC or not. But on my old car it was really hard to get the light bulbs out because of dirt, tight spot and all.
I used WD-40 and a rag to remove them in my old car. I used the straw attachment and carefully sprayed WD-40 around the retaining ring to cut down the friction. I then used the rag to get a better grip on it. Just make sure if you try this to wipe up all of the WD-40, I am sure light bulbs don't like the stuff.

Ok I was bored here you go, the picture of where it is located and how to turn it to get it out. You turn it like annontated (Counter Clock Wise when viewed from the back looking forward) and 1/16 of a turn and pull it straight back
