How to tint your tail lights RE-Vamped *Currently painting follow thread for updates*
So i noticed the DIY guide for tinting tails no longer includes the pictures for the step by step. Decided since i was tinting my tails, i would update and post my pictures as my project goes along. Stay tuned. Method used i give all credit to is FLEA.
Items needed:
Tail lights
Wet Sand paper (800,1000,2000)
Spray Max 2k Clear Coat (2 Cans)
Testor RC black window tint 3oz cans (6 Cans for lighter, 8 cans for darker)
Masking Tape
Scalpel
Rubbing Compound
Paint Polish
Wax
Buffer
Microfiber towels
Day 1: TYC tails arrive. FedEx says they are out for delivery. It sucks that its snowing and my tc is being slowly buried, i cant drive to pepboys to buy the masking tape and sandpaper delaying my project wah.
yay tail lights came in :D
Begining!
Okay take your masking tape and mask off any area you do not want to paint. I masked up the brake and reverse lights. Make sure to over lap the tape to ensure no paint gets onto the areas you dont want painted.
Next take 800 grit wet sand paper and sand the tail light till you get a haze. Make sure to constantly keep the paper wet, and clear of debris. Once you have achieve a haze such as this you can start to paint. Just make sure to wipe down the tail light, i used SEM solve on a paper towel to remove all wax, and crap left from the sanding.
Sanded
"Before painting your taillights ensure that it is not to windy or cold outside. If it is windy or cold try to paint in a somewhat closed off area, such as a garage (failure to do so will only result in lost time and difficulty getting the paint to go where you are trying to spray it). Also, be sure to have the taillights propped on a box at least 1 foot from the ground (try to avoid spraying directly on top of the taillight)." - FLEA
The first coat shoould be very light, so you can allow the other coats something to stick onto.
First coat
Wait 30 min to dry. Take your 1000 grit sandpaper and dip it into water and lightly wetsand the first coat, removing any orange peel and debris you can find.
" After each coat of paint has dried, wet sand with the sanding block and the 1000 grit sandpaper. Once again do smooth, light motions over the taillight. If you experience any drips or runs in the paint continue wet sanding until the run is no longer visible or until the area that was affected is smooth." - FLEA
Second coat
Continue painting and sanding with 1000 grit until the preferred darkness is achieved.
