Default overlay material?

Are there different overlay materials? which one is the best, i like bluebat's overlays, but i find his prices the cheapest which is awesome but is this due to lesser quality or no? If not, I'm jumping on some immediately!

They have different thickness and such.... I have the headlight armor overlays for the turn signals, but greatly disliked the rear tails, so I removed them.... The problem is that they look like overlays... which I guess is logical, cause that is what they are... But they don't look good close up... they just don't look as good as if the lenses were tinted permanently...

I'm going to buy extra tails and get them tinted for shows... as that seems to be the only thing that will really satisfy me quality wise.....

IC, so your saying from closeups you can tell that their basically just tinited stickers? I totally dig the look from a far, was it anything to do with the installation? And why not just tint your current lights permanantely? Is this illegal in Oregon/CA?

There are a wide variety of materials being used. The real inexpensive ones are all made from 2-3mil sign vinyl (the copy paper we use in the office is 4mil BTW). The smoked material we use is 22mil, impact resistant, and holds a good gloss.

Both shots below were taken just minutes after the install, they get even better after they have set.

Here is a DIY on what is involved with the installation. https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...327&highlight=

And no, I wouldn't say they look like stickers

I wouldn't say they look like stickers.... much better quality, but you'd be hard pressed to get it by a judge or someone at a show when compared to a real tint job.... I can see them from a mile away... unfortunately, since their a heck of a lot cheaper than getting them painted... I wish it wasn't that way... but when it comes down to it, I'm really going to have to get them painted to meet my standards...

Yes, it is technically illegal in every state to interfere the the light transmission of tails or headlamps from the factory state.... it's a federal vehicle safety code standard....

But, given that my car violates a lot of other standards.... I kind of push it anyways...

This would be the kiss of death in CA to have tinted tails... as it would give an officer every needed reason to pull you over and check your car for any illegal modifications, which pretty much is almost anything... and ticket the crap out of you for them....

You live in the worst state for mods..... it's horrible down there.... I had no idea till I went to scionnight II and heard about what you can and cannot do.... I would do nothing that would bring unwanted police attention to my baby.... keep it all hidden inside...

When I received my HeadlightArmor.com overlays, I didn't realize just how thick they are. The reason I bought my set from HeadlightArmor.com was the $$$. He was running a special for Scionlife.com members at the time and the $$$ was a steal! I was really impressed with the finished look and I highly recommend their product! Here's a pic of the proof...

BTW- I also have matching overlays on my Side Mirror Turn Signals.

^ I like your PIMPLE ^ LOL.....

What do you think about them when you are close up? I cannot get over the fact that they are noticable and you cannot ever really hide the edges of them...

Here's mine (Painted, not overlays):

I dunno how expensive u think it is to get yer taillights painted, but It only costs about $25 total.
- $16 Niteshades Spray
- $6 Clearcoat Spray
- $3 2000 Grit Sandpaper

As for the legallity, they are very illegal. I live in the Los Angeles area of CA and have not been pulled over for my taillights (knock on wood). I've actually recieved a compliment on my car from a cop once. I guess it all depends on yer area.

Yeah, I know nightshades.... see my front reflectors....

I'd only let pros do the rear though... that stuff is pretty easy to make a mistake on, and I'm too perfectionistic to have not matched tails, if I put too much on one light and not enough on the other.... It'd drive me insane....

But, I do like the look of yours a lot.... just waiting for a paint connection to come through so I can get these done by a pro...

If you're skilled with a hobby knife (no offense) and emery board, you can hide the edges really well. A lot of peeps ask my how my headlights look blue instead of clear. Their jaw drops when I tell them they're overlays! They can't even tell! They ask how I made the edges so smooth and I tell them about the hobby knife/emery board. Of course, this is the headlights. I haven't seen overlayed tails.

ANYONE can do the TBL in about 10 minutes. spritz with some water, lay it over, and squegee out the water. fast and easy (because it's a relatively flat surface with no weird curves).

I got rockblocker smoked tails in the mail yesterday. I'm currently trying to find somewhere local to install them (I don't trust myself with large pieces of vinyl just yet, and they are on the expensive side....)

Pretty much. I did mine right before I had to go to work. Took like 5 mins. I got mine from Blue_Batmobile.

Question for Bat: Do you make tail overlays in the same color red as the 3rd brakelight overlay? I'm thinking about getting the TYC tails (Yeah! I know all about them! ) and I want to do them red. Being that the bottom half of the TYCs are white, it doesn't really fit with the color scheme I'm going for. Thanks!
