My police officer friend was training on how to use laser and radar detectors. He was told in class that the hardest type of car to laser is one that is a dark color that absorbs light (such as black) and surfaces that are dull rather than shiny. That got him thinking about my car. I have a Black Sand Pearl with the front end mask. This was a perfect test vehicle to see if I was able to be lasered. We got together while he was on duty and I drove past him a couple of times. Because laser is most accurate when measured straight on from the front of the car or from the rear of the car, he lasered me from the front. Of the 5 times I drove by, he was only able to laser me once. He thinks that the reason why was because he specifically tried to hit my license plate. I thought that this was pretty cool because the only times I got speeding tickets in the past was because I was lasered (in my old car). Whenever the cops use radar I am able to slow down in time. With laser there is no time to slow down.

I thought this was kinda cool. Just a heads up for fellow ScionLifers.

So get a front end mask if you want to be less detectable by laser.

 

So if I keep my car waxed and shiney they'll still be able to use the laser?

 

Hmm.... maybe if I broke into a military facility I could steal some of the radar absorbant paint they use on the stealth bombers... then I could be protected from radar and laser

 

I am in the air force you can buy it as a civillian but its about 10 grand worth of paint just to paint a car

One thing to remember is, lidar (laser) has a range of about 1 mile and the unit has a sighting system. If you can be seen you can be checked. You can be checked quite a few times in the mile distance. In lidar class, you are trained to try to hit the license plate. It has the best reflectivity. But.......in court, radar of any kind is only used to verify what the officers eyes are telling him. You can get a ticket even when no speed detection device is used. Just f.y.i., sorry for butting in guys :D

Just b/c you don't know how to control a car, doesn't mean that anyone who can is an idiot, try driving in Europe, they drive faster and have less accidents...hmmmm wierd how that works, then again they don't freak out if you get in their "bubble" like americans do

 

Thats because they have more requirements to even get a licence there. Here you have to be 16 and take a driving class thats a joke.

 

Thats true also, although I did have some friends that still couldn't drive very well, but on the highways no problem, cruising at 120mph was nothing

 

We are not in freaking Europe are we??? Most teenage drivers, drive like idiots and DONT know how to control a car. When you lose a family member due to someone elses lack of respoect for OTHER drivers on the road and feel as if they can speed and are invincible to anyone around them. Dont come crying. People think just cause they have a 5 speed and think they have a cool car that they can do anything......well your wrong. Hey im all for speed too but I know where to go THE TRACK!

 

haha... I will never drive at a speed just because a government offical put a sign up. That because said I won't drive like an idiot either.. I don't really speed unless I'm on the freeway and there is little traffic. A safe speed all depends on weather, traffic, your type of car, your reaction speed\alertness, your driving skills, and your familiarity with the road you are driving on.

 

More effort into teaching would go a long way toward making US roads safer. Driving around for 30 minutes at a time a few times a week for a month doesnt make a good driver. You might only drive 10 hours and they say good enough you are on your own.

 

mythbusters busted this myth a while ago, and that is there is no material or color that can stop your car from being dtected by police radar. they used dark colors light colors tin foil gold foil, everything nothin worked
