Rebased Philips OEM HID bulbs (4300k)
Has anyone around here installed these bulbs in the stock reflector? I'm interested in how the cutoff looks like, what glare shield (if any) have you used and how bad the glare really is. Will they fit without removing the stock glare shield?
Since these are OEM D2R bulbs, I'm thinking they would be better in the stock reflector than the average "made in China" D2S bulb. I know, HIDs are illegal, retrofits are the only way to go etc etc

the cutoff will look like a stock cutoff. Their's no projector in play and your not messing with the housing so it will stay the same. Glare will still be as bad as any other HID kit. I wouldnt remove the stock shield. Its there for a reason. These are made for OE Reflector HID cars without projectors. Their reflector housing is made for this type of bulb which is why its coated with something, dont know what it is. You'll still have to find a set of d2r/d2s ballast to power them. Retro is the only way to go!
Better as in the bulbs would be more reliable because it is name brand. Less chance of wacked out mismatched color shifting and premature death.
Its wouldn't be better in the sense that it will have less glare or a better looking cutoff...you're still intensifying the light in a housing thats not made to handle them.
One problem with rebasing is that sometimes the filament / arc isn't positioned where it should be, causing glare and a bad cutoff.

Yanki01 I wouldn't remove the glare shield either, but I'm not sure the bulb will fit (9006 bulb is about 2.5" long, rebased bulb seems to be longer). I agree that retro is better, but I'm not going to do that.
07specTC I think the glare would be better, this is a D2R bulb, so it has the ceramic coating on the lower side. Most aftermarket kits come with (poorly) rebased D2S bulbs. There's a big difference between D2R and D2S.
If someone has these bulbs on, can you please post a pic of the cutoff line? Thanks!

why not just use one of the proven reliable HID kit sellers in the sponsored forums... operatic is a member on here who I know sells good kits and they produce the same amount of light.
i know you don't care, but you should retro fit projectors in there when using those bulbs. I don't care about you, I care about if you drive up to me and blind me. Your ignorance could adversely effect others.

Whats the difference? (Taken from http://faqlight.carpassion.info/hl-hid-bulbs.htm )
The main difference is the U-shaped masking on the D2R that blocks out unpredictable light in certain directions.
Basically D2R bulbs were made for cars that use reflector housings (IS300).
Instead of designing the housing to reduce glare, it was just cheaper to put a "anti-glare coating" on the bulb.
He was wondering if anyone has tried these before and if they would help reduce glare.
does it really matter? The fact at hand is that our OEM housing are not designed for these bulbs. The reflectors maximize the output of the halogen bulbs and I would think it would do the same with any HID bulb.
oh and thanks for that link
"Using a D2R in anything else than a OEM HID headlight designed for the D2R bulb makes no sense. It will only reduce output. Some HID kits comes with D2R bulbs. Some amateur kit designers will even claim that D2R genrally reduces glare in a retrofit. This is nonsense. The D2R bulb masking is around 3-4 a'clock and 8-9 o'clock when bulb is in right position. Those are not the (only) sectors that creates glare. "

I appreciate your concern, but if I were that ignorant, I'd just buy the cheap "made in China" D2S lights and shine them in everyone's face, wouldn't I? As you know, there are a lot of reflector-type OEM HID systems out there (think Prius and the old G35), so I'm trying to figure out what makes them so special. I know that the reflector is different, for one, but the reflector alone doesn't make a good headlight, you need a bulb to go with it.
HID bulbs don't maximize the output...it intensifies them, which is usually where glare and a crappy cutoff line comes from.
If there was a way to minimize glare in a halogen housing and it is relatively inexpensive, why not?

to be honest, I wouldnt put a bulb in a housing it wasn't designed for. You can test it out and see how it works... I know BlueBatMobile makes overlays to eliminate unwanted glare caused by HIDs which work great.
I love the fact that you are considering the glare more so than the other guys that are on the road. It's just like the thing i just quoted said, the D2R doesn't eliminate all of the glare.
I am not against the idea of people testing out inexpensive ways of remedying the glare. I would love to have everyone enjoy a similar output to that of my retrofit... its great.
This is a sensitive subject for me (literally) having cataracts and all.

Speaking of which, this looks like a good deal for a retrofit kit

you might want to retract your statement about "d2s bulbs were made to be used in reflector housing" because thats actually false.
the reflector themselves were designed to be used in tandem d2s bulbs. d2s bulbs are quite common on benz, lexus, & bmw headdlights and 90% of those use projectors.
theres only a handfull of cars thats use reflector housing with d2s bulbs and most of those are not even produced any more. one example would be 1999-2003 acura tl which uses reflector housing.
please dont use d2s or d2r in a reflector housing its not designed because its gaudy, it blinds the hell out of everyone(its a selfish act) and the light source is uncontrolled which could lead you to getting a nice ticket. do it at a bare aZZ minimum with a projector housing (cheap anzo or 08 lights ) or retro fit
It's not false, it's just incomplete. D2R (not D2S) bulbs WERE made to be used in reflector housing, but not just any housing. It's true that OEM HID reflectors are different than OEM halogen ones. If you happen to know what makes a HID reflector adequate for D2R use (as opposed to a halogen reflector), please share that knowledge.
My point is - everyone keeps saying "use projectors", but nobody can explain what's so special about a reflector made for HID use, other than the standard "it's different".
