Default Shaved Door Handles Illegal?

So my car is in the auto body shop getting some body and paint work done ;) and while it's in there, I'd like to get the door handles shaved to give it a cleaner, nicer look.

One problem... I've been told a couple, random times that shaving the door handles and installing door poppers is illegal due to it being a "safety hazard" if the car is involved in a crash.

So before giving the shop the OK to start bondo'ing, reliable answers to this would be much appreciated. [P.S. I live in Los Angeles area, CA]

My friend had an Integra GSR with shaved door handles, and he never got harrased by the cops. It might be because his car was black, and you couldnt really tell they were shaved from far away. I say just go for it.

Its not illegal. If emergency services are unable to open the doors, they'll simply cut the door away.

As a bonus, you're car will be totaled (since they cut thorught the a and b pillars)

Damn.

I just accidently clicked your myspace. Hot. Just hot.

The car isn't bad either.

Be myspace friend!

VA is pretty strict being a commonwealth and I never been harassed when I had my shaved handles. I got at least like 6 tickets and stopped at points and never been questioned about it. I guess it really depends on the cop and how observant they are.

there is a legal issue with shaved door handles at the track, if you bring it to the track you need door handles in case you crash. I know thats the law in NY

How much is it running you to get the handles shaved and poppers? One of the things I've been debating on getting done after Christmas passes and what not...

That applys the same here too. You can't race if you have the handles in certain tracks of you must use web net and window down.

Cynce... sorry about the accident. It looks pretty bad..Which mods are you doing to your bumper and fenders?

It IS illegal in Louisiana. It depends on whether the inspection person wants to pass you or not(we have yearly inspections in LA.) but you're not in Louisiana. I wouldn't see a big problem, but it wouldn't hurt to do some more research on it! Good luck with it!
