Smoking the taillights
You basically have two options... Overlays (the sticker stuff), of which there are multiple brands out there. Or Nightshades spray. There's a DIY in the Tech section on applying the Nightshades and a few DIYs for the overlays.
Check out Bluebatmobile.net or Headlightarmor.com for the overlays and more info. There are probably more two, but those are the two on my mind at the moment.
Others can chime in on what works and doesn't and their opinions. My only experience is trying to apply the overlays... which was a total PITA for me... but I only tried one brand - some are different and go on differently.

hey i recently smoked my tails..... with vht nightshades. all in all its not difficult but it is time consuming.... apply the whole can to your tails alternating so coats can dry evenly between sprays. after they are dried wet sand them down and buff with cotton pad. mine look amazing!!! and of course the more you put on the darker they will be nope this helps! (i used overlays on 3rd brake light and mirror signals.......BIG PAIN!)

I really hope it wasn't those TYC's. Furthermore, I hope the original owner took good care of them. If you neglect them, they won't last. Just keep in mind that you're now dealing with a painted surface that requires as much attention as the OEM paint
