Default Some guys just offered me free windhsield / ripoff???

Hey guys.. i might be lucky, or im being screwed. I thought i need to post this up.

So yesterday, i took my friend somewhere... and some guy walks up to us and looked at my windshield. And he introduced himself - he's working for an autoglass company and he told me that i could have my windshield changed for free thru my insurance, because in the FL state if i have more than 5 little hole on the windshield ( because of the rocks) then i can get my glass changed most probably for free!!!!

well.. i did have a a few little rockchips and one of them was so big that i could stick a pen in it. i wanted to fix it and he told me that they can fill the hole in but it would be much better for me to call my insurance, make a claim and get a brand new windshield.

So he called my insurance, i heard the whole conversation... my deductible was zero, everything was fine, so we were set. He asked me what time is good for me and they will change it for me and i dont have to pay a penny.

uhm... am i missing something... if something is " free" that cant be good, right.. or am i wrong?

is my insurance will go up a little bit? or they will mess up my car> i just saw a tc and the plastic piece above, across the windshield was all crooked.. it will happen to me too if they change the windshield?

i got the appointment next week so i have time to think about it.

My biggest fear about this if they mess up my car and you could tell from 5 yard that they changed my windshield because all the plastic, rubber part is all crooked around the windshield.

Many insurance policies have the option of a zero deductible glass replacement. You'd have to ask your company about your specific policy, but sounds about right.

Not sure on the affects on your insurance... but if it is any comparison, I have Progressive and filed a claim last summer from being apparently tapped in the rear in a parking lot (I never saw it and had no note left). I asked about the claim after it was done and they said it should have zero affect on my insurance. Rental for 3 days was covered as well as what was left after my $250 deductible. They ended up covering nearly $400.

So if that has no affect on mine, I would hope your situation would have very little affect on yours. But you'd have to call to verify.

It sounds like the guy just wanders around giving that speech to make a few $. Kind of smart really. Like I said, many policies have this kind of coverage.

i dont know about chips or pits, but i had a golf-ball sized rock hit me and crack my windshield about a year ago, i made a claim through my insurance, allstate at the time, and they replaced it free, zero deductible, and no effect to my insurance whatsoever

the guys my insurance chose acctually came to my job, replaced it within an hour, and looks good as new! the rubber seals look stock and i have not had any increase in wind noise or any water leaks either

the only difference is that it wasnt a toyota glass, its pilkington, which i googled and seems like theyre pretty damm big glass company

so yes it sounds good!

^yep, the company should cover any mistakes, and damage done to your vehicle if its their fault, try to find out about this company a little more

your best bet is for you to call your insurance company yourself, and have them chose a company for you, then you know the company doing the work has a good reputation

That's a good idea. It sounds on the up and up... but it couldn't hurt to look into the company and see if there are any good or bad reports about their work.

ok I have gone on these forums a couple of times posting about auto glass because that is what i do for a living, I don't know about the insurance side of this but I can tell you about the glass side this for hours, ok first thing first, was this someone from safelight that hit you up??? because they are a nation wide autoglass company used by many to learn how to install glass, alot of them don"t have the much know how. Ok and the thing on the top of the windshield you refered to is called the molding, which on tc's has to be replaced or you will run the risk of devolping a leak. ok so on all cars there is a stamp on the windshield which in the glass biz iswe call the "bug", it identified the windshield manufacture and all of the DOT regulation that the maker of the glass used in the making of that specific piece of glass and usally the windshield number. Our cars use an fw2504 gtn factory, fw stands for forign windshield, 2504 is because it is the 2504 differnt fw introduced in north america, and gtn stands for green tint, you can request that your new windshield is a gbn instead of gtn, then you would have a blue shade band across the top. On the factory bug on our windshield it will be differnt then any replacement glass you will get, unless o.e., and again I don't recomend using safelight because they use there own brand of galss called SERVICE glass and it sucks, and everyones bug that says service, I know it sucks. Second if I was you I would recomend that you go with a PLK brand windshield which is a very close match to our factory glass, actually that brand comes factory in alot of toyotas. also if you want the shade band ask for it to be GBN. So if i was you I would call this glass place tomorrow and make sure that they have what you want, and if I was you I would recomend you them them you want to make sure your getting an FW2504 GBN PLK and that they are replacing the molding.

yeah plk is short for pilkington, and like I said toyota uses them alot for o.e. apps. and this informantion doesn't just apply to tc's it applys to all scions, I know the xa's windsheild number is FW2397, and a first gen xb is a FW2398, and a second gen xb is a fw2849 if I remeber right , I cant think of and xd's off of the top of my head... but pilkington make shaded and non shaded windsheilds for all of our scion app's. just request that your installer use a plk

Yeah I had a windshield replaced using my policy,$100 deductable,no rate increase,if you have it written into the policy you can have a $0 deductable even, and some insurance companies replace for free once or yearly if needed......yes carefull with Safelite windows.....mine has ripples on the passenger side,it gets anoying if you look out of it just right, but it was free and car was 8 days old with shattered windshield, big rock from semi wnet through.
