I don't like the airflow in the car when you have the windows just slightly open as there is nowhere for the air to go.
With tilt-out rear windows the air would come in at the rear windows and exit the roof or side windows due to the low pressure/high velocity air coming off the windshield.

If you use just the rear windows on a hot day and turned your A/C on fresh air blasting it to the floor you would exhaust the maximum amount of hot air while introducing the maximum amount of cold air. Once your feet are cool, switch to recirc. and close the rear windows. This would help cool the car down much faster on a hot day.

How hard would it be to get manual or power tilt-out hardware installed?

I'm thinking of something like you might see on a minivan rear window as uncool as that sounds at first blush I think it'd be pretty sweet on a tC.

Anyone interested in such a project other than me?

 

sounds like a good idea, but i would put my money elsewhere. i think the windows and sunroof are enough.

 

I think the rear quarter windows are too small for that application. It would be more useful if the hatch glass mechanically opens up an inch or two to vent hot air out. But like what ^^ he ^^ said, I'd put my money elsewhere.

 

u can always use the sunroof also...

Just addin my two cents, but I used to have an 01 bmw 325ci and the rear windows

were powered and they just used actuators to push them open or closed.

I actually had thought of this already, but it seems like a pain and a bunch of green for
a minor change.

 

i think you'll just create leaks.. not knockin you or anything but doin something like that will be so difficult to make a seal

 

if it was an electric motor that operates it and only pushes it out an inch or two, i think that would be a good idea

 

one of my first cars was a Mercury Capri with a manually operated tilt-out rear window. I liked the feature a lot. However, it was not very air or watertight and the cars were easy to break into through that back window. It was common for a thief to pry open the back window with a screwdriver to gain access to the car. Over time, the windows themselves became hot commodities and people would just steal the rear window! I had one of my rear windows stolen but by that time the car was so old and worthless they didn't bother taking the car.
Time and technology has changed and I would think it would be possible to create an exterior flush seal that was air and water-tight these days. I wouldn't want to pay the cost for an electrically powered pop-out, but a manual would be reasonable. Something that you could operate easily from the drivers seat or something a rear passenger could operate.

 

I think it could be something cool to add... but it's probably too late in the tC's life for Scion to bother with and same goes for an aftermarket company. Would be one hell of a diy though.

But even if there is an 09, I can't really see them doing the development for something like that for one, maybe two model years. I could easily be wrong though.

Strange that something like this didn't come up sooner though. I really don't recall seeing any threads like this before.

 

all you need to do to help airflow when you have your windows barely down is to use the tilt feature of our sunroofs.

This has crossed my mind thousands of times. Crack the windows and roof with the rear windows cracked would creat excellent air flow. As it is on the hwy you tend to get a lil beat up when the windows are open at speed

 

If I want airflow from the outside, I turn the recirc off, set the HVAC to output from the dash (not defrost) and crack the sunroof. Air will flow pretty good from those vents on the dash if you're driving.

 

I thought I was the only one who wanted this!! I've been meaning to call the glass shop to see if they can do it

^the mazda rx-8 windows in the back pop out and they are tiny bit smaller than the tC windows
