I would think it depends on where you live. I live in FL and we have no inspection. I do believe they are illegal everywhere cuz they're no longer DOT approved but not sure if they'd ignore it or not. I've been stopped with tinted tails a few times and they never said anything yet. I would say if you're in cali or NY forget about it. Best thing is buy a used pair on ebay for $30-$50 shipped and put them on for inspection. It should only take 15min to change them out.

It really does depend on where you live, who inspects it, how they are tinted. Most states have really gray criteria and tend to give the inspector discretion. Seems like most focus on visible distances first and the rest second. The so called spirit of the law factor. Some states do have a line item banning paint though. If you are really concerned about legality don't mod your car at all. If you do mod it have a contingency plan. Another set of tails or the ability to easily remove what was done (like our kits), or the ability to get it passed so to speak.

Good Luck!

Any have any DIY problems tinting there tail lights? I ran to the store and got some 20% tint. But making it completly smooth is nearly impoosible around our tailights odd curves.

Any idea on which is th ebest place to start or tips? I laid the tint over the taillight (with back peeled) and tried sqeegee'ing from ther ebut no luck creases to wild.

if your car is "show car or off road" you will get away with it. So that leaves you with the choice of either: getting show material or get a lift! Other than that tint on lights are not legal in most states.

well.. using tint film will not work very well.

it's not meant to be applied and used in such applications. it's also not suitable for outdoors... (that's why tint film is placed on the inside of windows.)

you need to buy vinyl.

i didn't diy, i got lamin-x done (FOUR TIMES it needed to be replaced) at a reputable place around here until one of the guys just gave me a plastic board to push down the film if it warped. i.e. "push down everytime you look at your car" and i'm vain so it got pushed down a lot. it's behaving now.

oh yah, and it takes forever and a day to dry b/c of a) this cold and b) the crazy thickness of the film.

all in all, i'm happy, it's not blacked out, just smoked and you can see the lights shine through just fine.

Window tint is for windows. Here is how something designed for the taillights goes on. http://headlightarmor.com/index.asp?...on=Custom&ID=9

Jonstintedtails.com <--- Awesome tint work.

I got tinted tails about a week and a half ago from Jon. No trouble with the cops so far and they look great. Gotta take some pictures this week to send to Jon when I get the car cleaned. I highly recommend them.

Keep your stock tail lights if you worried about inspections. Seriously it takes like 20 minutes to switch tail lights in the tC.

I got my tails tinted. They stopped my car and asked me about them. I told them that the lens was like that from the factory to match my BCP. The cop was like "Oh, ok then. If that's how they came from the factory then there shouldn't be a problem with them." and just drove off.

pic is old from when I was in SC about 5 months ago.

that's why i buy the vinyl material myself and cut it once it's on the tails... you'll end up saving more money that way.

don't use window tint!

Yeah I got the same thing done on my white tC and I am in AZ. When I got the car it never had to go through a level two inspection so for those in AZ I dont think anyone will have an issue. I had mine done by RockBlocker. Its just a thick vinyl that stretches over the light and when it dries it never comes off... Fairly cheap too.
