it could very well be your timing belt.

WRONG...
TCs don't have a belt. The cams are chain driven.
Go tell the guy at the dealer to have someone ELSE check it out...

the way you describe this it is when the car is running. yes? then i'd say problem

if you got to your place and got out and the car is off and noise, then it's the heat shields around the exhaust. a fast ticking, kinda metal. they get hot and expand then start to cool off. mine does it everytime i park. tick tick tick tick...

but yeh, if it sounds really scary, dealer it and make them tell you for sure. better safe than stranded

Don't all cars do that after a long drive? I know my parents cars do.

Sounds similar to the way a clutch with a broken finger can sound sometimes since it stops when you depress the clutch. But it would most likely be hard to get into gear then. No matter what, I would have someone else look at it if it sounds serious like you say.

i think i'm having a similar problem. it makes the clicking noise when it's idle. but when i rev it a little.. it goes away. when i drive it.. it goes away.. but as soon as i come to a stop and the engine idles again.. the clicking noise comes back.

^^^ Now that sounds like the PCV valve. Take heart, the clicking means it's working. Go stick your head under the hood of a Cavy-- or any OBD2 OHV car, for that matter. The placement of the PCV, and I reckon the pressure being pushed out of the crankcase-- it sounds like a woodpecker under there.

My wife's Corolla will get a good PCV rhythm going on hot days.

The injectors on most new cars make quite a noise as well.

so i'm supposed to be happy about it? are you sure it's the PCV? the noise is annoying as hell though.. and i'd rather it not make ANY noise. is this an easy fix?

There is no "fix", as there's nothing wrong. Turn the radio up.

I figured it out! There was this little plug right beneath my DC strut bar that was vibrating against it! But nothing a little old rubber mousepad and some double sided sticky tape couldn't dampen.
