Default Windshield tint strip - how to remove rearview mirror??

My girlfriend has a 2009 scion tC. We took the car a few weeks ago to get the windows tinted and have a tint strip put on the front window. The tinter said he couldn't figure out how to get the rearview mirror off so he tinted around it and I hate the look. How do you get it off? Or better yet - how do you tint further down the windshield beyond the mirror so that you can't see the mirror mount?

The mirror is mounted onto a smaller square piece and the square piece is glued on. The mirror somehow comes off the little square piece.

I know what you are thinking though even if you leave the square piece on and tint around that, you'd still see a square opening in the tint strip but my truck is done well below the mirror and it's seamless....I have no idea how it was done. I want the same look on my gf's scion.

This might lend your way:

This one talks about removing the tan rectangular strip that is used to hide the wires for powered mirrors:

Rear View Mirror Install (Auto Dimming)

And the above article is in the tech section here at ScionLife.

It looks like you just pull the mirror off by pulling it down and towards you.

I messed with it a little bit ago and was able to get it off. I don't know if all years are the same but with this 09, all you do is slide the mirror upwards (towards the roof) and it comes off the glass mount. Make sure you grab the entire mirror and arm when you start to pull on it. Shouldn't take more than 30 seconds to get it off and don't force it. I tried doing what the links above said and that was NOT the way to do it. I slightly messed up the clips inside while doing that but was able to bend them back in place and it fits back like factory now. Super easy and I will take it off for my tinter to re do the strip.

well i just went and got mine done at a local shop earlier today. for $27 bucks it wasnt all that bad. im not sure if they took my mirror off though cause they did a pretty fast job. by the time i looked at the car after filling out some paper work it was already done. lol. so far i like it but the piece that holds the mirror has about 1 cm bellow the tint but its not a problem for me.
