**UPDATE**

Sorry it took me so long to respond, it’s been a really hectic week. I got my car back from the dealer recently (they did a half-assed job on the options, might I add) and they claim that the transmission thump I am feeling is normal. They explained that when the engine is cold (i.e. after having sat for a few hours – not necessarily when it’s cold out) the engine revs high to warm it up in idle. The means than when initially shifting from park, reverse, or neutral to DRIVE it is normal to experience a thump or thud upon entering the drive gearing.

I think this is a load of rubbish. My ’05 never did this and I’m not seeing convincing evidence from ScionLifer’s that this is a normal occurrence. The dealer said they checked the transmission extensively and everything is working 100% properly.

To clarify, the car does not thud when moving from park to reverse or park to neutral. It does thud, however, when moving from either park, reverse, or neutral into drive when cold (as defined above).

We’ll see what happens. Thanks again for your input , guys.

My 07 does it too, as well as my nissan xterra and my work truck F150 as well.

Seriously, don't worry about it. It is normal and there are more important things to worry about, like fixing the dealer's halfass workmanship.
