5th gear?

all of my gears feel fine but when i go into 5th it seems like it doesnt go as smoothly as it should sometimes. it doesnt grind or anything, just feels weird. anybody elses do this?

Nick06tC 01-19-2008 09:14 PM

It should be the same as the others. Take it to the dealer and have them look at it!!

When you are sitting in your garage or something try putting it from fifth to reverse a few time and see how it is going into reverse. it sounds like a syncro and 5th and reverse are on the same syncro.

bigwillystyle23 01-20-2008 11:05 PM

yea except there is no reverse synchro i dont think

goaliesmk 01-21-2008 12:44 AM

Well then how do you put it in reverse? Reverse gear is a different type of gear then all the others which is why you hear a whine noise in reverse but there has to be a syncro.

bigwillystyle23 01-21-2008 12:54 AM

first gear doesnt have a synchro either. thats why you have to be pretty much stopped to put the car in reverse or 1st gear. somebody correct me if im wrong.

jct 01-21-2008 12:57 AM

i can shift my car into first around 5mph

bigwillystyle23 01-21-2008 01:28 AM

yea me too.

silverstreaktc 01-21-2008 01:39 AM

same here. i hold it to the front left like im puttin it into first and let it shift itself and its usually at around 7.3567291MPH

SquallLHeart 01-21-2008 08:34 AM

reverse has no synchro, straight cut gears.. and you need to be at a stop to shift into reverse.. or grinding..... yea.. bad

bkuhl 01-21-2008 09:03 AM

so you mean all those movie scenes where they flip the car around and drive in reverse were lying to me!?!?!?!

I have to agree with you about the tC (and my last car was the same), but try this. When you go from 4th to 5th, half way through the shift, make very deliberate movements through the "H" pattern. Example: ...4th..."forward-neutral-right"..."forward", to 5th" movements, with VERY short hesitations in between.

What you're experiencing is the reason some gearboxes (think Porsche 928 and certain racing transmissions) utilize a different "H" pattern. Instead of 1st gear being away from you, it's towards you (where our 2nd gear is).

Go though the gears and now 4th and 5th shifts are a fore-aft movement. Hence, there's none of that, "....it doesn't grind or anything, just feels weird" sensation."

That "feels weird sensation" could turn into a broken gearbox if the 4 - 5 shift-changes are frequent.

if you guys double clutching and rev matching then you should be able to out it in 1st around 5-15 mph and reverse you can be rolling while putting it in reverse

HaYnSktC 01-21-2008 07:38 PM

idk ive put it into reverse before while still rolling.. and all i heard was grinding haha

Sorry for over-explaining. Only pay attention to the 1st paragraph. The rest wasn't addressing your issue.

So you said, "....but when i go into 5th it seems like it doesnt go as smoothly as it should sometimes. "

So I'm assuming this is a minor annoyance / observation you are referring to. At least that's how I took your statement.

I am simply suggesting as you go from 4th to 5th, when you're in neutral all the way over to the right (and immediately before make that last "shove" into 5th), just hesitate for a split second before you move the lever forward. Try not to make a blindingly fast upshift.

bigwillystyle23 01-22-2008 02:48 AM

oh okay! thanks alot man.

goaliesmk 01-23-2008 04:05 PM

The tc has 3 syncros. 1 for first and second. 1 for third and forth and 1 for fifth and reverse. There is a reverse syncro and it grinds because the syncro engages a idler gear as well as reverse and if you think first has no syncro then you need to by a book.
