It should be the same as the others. Take it to the dealer and have them look at it!!

When you are sitting in your garage or something try putting it from fifth to reverse a few time and see how it is going into reverse. it sounds like a syncro and 5th and reverse are on the same syncro.

Well then how do you put it in reverse? Reverse gear is a different type of gear then all the others which is why you hear a whine noise in reverse but there has to be a syncro.

first gear doesnt have a synchro either. thats why you have to be pretty much stopped to put the car in reverse or 1st gear. somebody correct me if im wrong.

reverse has no synchro, straight cut gears.. and you need to be at a stop to shift into reverse.. or grinding..... yea.. bad

I have to agree with you about the tC (and my last car was the same), but try this. When you go from 4th to 5th, half way through the shift, make very deliberate movements through the "H" pattern. Example: ...4th..."forward-neutral-right"..."forward", to 5th" movements, with VERY short hesitations in between.

What you're experiencing is the reason some gearboxes (think Porsche 928 and certain racing transmissions) utilize a different "H" pattern. Instead of 1st gear being away from you, it's towards you (where our 2nd gear is).

Go though the gears and now 4th and 5th shifts are a fore-aft movement. Hence, there's none of that, "....it doesn't grind or anything, just feels weird" sensation."

That "feels weird sensation" could turn into a broken gearbox if the 4 - 5 shift-changes are frequent.

Sorry for over-explaining. Only pay attention to the 1st paragraph. The rest wasn't addressing your issue.

So you said, "....but when i go into 5th it seems like it doesnt go as smoothly as it should sometimes. "

So I'm assuming this is a minor annoyance / observation you are referring to. At least that's how I took your statement.

I am simply suggesting as you go from 4th to 5th, when you're in neutral all the way over to the right (and immediately before make that last "shove" into 5th), just hesitate for a split second before you move the lever forward. Try not to make a blindingly fast upshift.

The tc has 3 syncros. 1 for first and second. 1 for third and forth and 1 for fifth and reverse. There is a reverse syncro and it grinds because the syncro engages a idler gear as well as reverse and if you think first has no syncro then you need to by a book.
