it's never cheaper to swap in a new 5 speed..

i just got my swap done. me, 318_tc, and mystikchris are the only ones whose done this (as far as i know). credits to 318_tc and chris for helping me out..

basically the parts list is complete but i need to clarify a few things.

i was able to get the whole 5spd transmission change-over at my local junkyard for $750.

you don't need both axles. you only need the driver side axle off of a manual transmission since the passenger side axle is the same for both automatic and manual transmissions.

you'll need the wiring harness from a MANUAL tC.

the automatic brake pedal can be left on if desired.. there's enough clearance between the clutch and brake pedals.

the ECU if your auto can be used with your tranny swap, but a CEL will be displayed for not having any automatic parts. the work-around to this is to get a manual ECU and mess with the immobilizer. i can send you the documents.

the shop is gonna have to drill holes for the master cylinder to get through.. there's a cut-out template to show where it 's supposed to be drilled.

I advise you to upgrade your clutch at this time since upgrading your clutch later on will yield to the same results - taking out the tranny and starting over from there. and it will cost like $600-$800 to do.

the shop i went to hooked me up for $700 of labor. they took 4 days to finish.

any other questions, i'll answer..

like 318_tC said, alot of extra money is required. i'm in the middle of converting mines right now as we speak and so far the bill is over 2 grand, most of the parts you can get from junk yards =) and others you have to get from the dealership. i work at toyota so i got a discount on all parts, and the junk yard parts discounted to and it still over 2 grand, its just a pain to do, but i've modded my car so much that i dont want to take everything off and trade for a manual, its a good learning experience...but like 318_tC said, do not do this if you dont have extra money and time. PAIN PAIN PAIN !!!

yes, $700 for labor for the WHOLE swap, no joke. extra $600 for upgraded clutch/flywheel. so it all came to $1300 FIRM. this shop i went to is top notch.. they got done in 4 days!!! i have to go back tomorrow cuz they need to fix something with the clutch start switch and it's settled with.

i got the manual wiring harness from the car at the junkyard.

well, they had problems with the clutch start switch and all that.. so they just bypassed the clutch. i can start the car without depressing the clutch.. i just gotta remember not to start it in gear. haha.

other than that, everything works smoothly.. shifts of gears are a little jerky, but i just gotta break in the new clutch. 500 miles of normal driving, gunning it is so tempting.
