Default bracket snapped durring typhoon installation?

hey, got a question for anyone who might know:
bought my 2006 tc used (10000 miles) complete with typhoon, but had a clunking sound when i went over bumps. took a look and noticed the bracket next to the fuses was snapped in two. needless to say the intake was loose in there. i fixed it up with some j and b weld. anyone else see this problem? seems like whoever installed it was a idiot. all good now, but i'm still trying to figure how he broke the damn bracket!

i over tightened my Injen and broke the bolt, but not the bracket....might have been a faulty weld if it broke at the weld, otherwise who knows...

was it on the primary tube or the second one??

Which part? The bracket that is made to the motor mount? If so welcome to K&N and thier engineering mistake. I was given a K&N CAI and put it on my car.. for sound and looks obviously. It lasted about a month before it broke off that bracket. Terrible mounting setup. Once that breaks you start hearing it rattle.. then the other brackets (That come with the CAI) start twisting and bending. Mine was put back in a box as soon as that happened. I may fab up a proper bracket for it and put it back on just to dress up the engine bay, but it wont go back on as is.

Oh, and I have heard of at least 5 others on forums with the same issue. And I would bet that many others just havent looked close enough to notice it. You can JB weld it... and it will break again eventually.

Yes, it can definately break again. When I looked over the DIY AEM CAI install, I cant help but wonder how long 1 of the brackets will last. I had an AEM V2 intake in my Civic. My 1st one, bracket ripped right off the pipe in about 5 months. They offer lifetime warranty so I received a 2nd one. That broke in about a year. Received a 3rd and that was that. My cousin has K&N Typhoon on his xA and we put a rubber piece to where the 1st bracket (counting from the TB) mounts and after about 1/2 a year, the rubber piece ripped apart...... but it's better than the bracket ripping apart.

reffering to AEM CAI: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=123625 25th picture, top bracket.

Yep, the stamped metal bracket on the motor mount is not made to be torqued back and forth at all. The stock airbox mounts in two places on the fender well as well as that bracket, which keep it solid. If I make a new bracket, it will be a plate cut to screw to the original airbox holes on the fender that sticks out to support that bracket. But given that the CAI is looks and sound only for the most part.. it isnt high on the priority list.

That is weird that people have issues with this. I have had mine for almost a year now and not a brocken peice on it anywhere. Still holding strong.

Just look close every now and then. The part that breaks is hard to see unless you are looking for it. I noticed mine rattled more and more when I started the car, which prompted me to look for it. Once you really look at the stock setup and the way the K&N mounts, it is pretty obvious how bad it is set up.

^^^ yuup, wont notice it unless youre looking for it. My 1st intake had its bracket completely ripped off, 2nd one I was looking more closely at it from time to time and the bracket eventually had a slight tear but still needed to be replaced.

yeah, i've never had one break either. sounds to me like something wasnt lined up right, putting stress on the bracket.

not sure about the tC, but on my CIvic, no matter what, the bracket is put under stress. The bracket attaches to a piece that does not move with the engine while the engine is under load.

There is no way to install it lined up improperly. It fits one way. The issue is that they have a solid mount from a moving peice (the intake) to a flimsy, stamped metal bracket that stays in one place. So it constantly twists back and forth on it causing it to break. That is why the stock airbox has two more mounting points other thatn that. The part that mounts to that bracket on the OEM setup does not move when the engine torques.

Only by the warranty on the intake. It would be worth a try I guess. Mine was given to me.. so I never tried.

Yeah, the people with engine dampers seemed to have this problem less. The movement of the engine in relation to the intake mounts is what causes it.

think i fixed the noise problem. bought a 3 in. plumbing coupling, cut it down to 2 and 3/4 inches and wrapped it around the intake right next to the hump hose, kinda shoved between the intake and the body. no more rattling. not pretty but not too ugly. got pix. can't post 'em.

not an "html"er. looked at the troubleshooting section. wasn't much help. if you can tell me briefly how to do it, i'll post them.
