I have a 2007 Scion tC and the A/C compressor is going out on it, the stealership said with would be $2200 to repair and that just doesn't sound right, I know i can replace the compressor myself, i just don't know how to do the gas part of it. can i just bleed the gas off, replace the compressor then take it to a repair shop to have them refill it. i'm going to be replacing the dries, and flushing the condensor and maybe even adding an inline filter to help a little more. i can buy a brand new compressor for around 350$ and i refuse to pay someone $2200 for something i know i can do on my own. any ideas on how to recharge the system after i get the new compressor on?

 

I would drain it, then replace the compressor, then do a refill. Quick question..do you notice a rattling noise when you turn on the a/c? I have a feeling mine is going to I just wanna be sure.

 

Technically you can charge 134a yourself. You can buy a gauge/manifold set than buy cans of 134a from your local auto supply. One thing you will also need is a vacuum pump to pull a vacuum on the system and remove any contaminants. You will also need to add oil back into the system - which lubricates the compressor. I know you can rent the gauge/manifold set and vacuum pump from autozone around here, so Im sure you can anywhere.

 

There is some on there from 400 to 30 dollars most are around 50 to 100 buy it drain it fill it 150 200 dollar fix

This is a proper way of doing the job. If you do not have a air tight system, then you run the risk of having the ac system failing or not cooling properly.

 

if your sure its your compressor then you can have a shop evac. your system. then take it home, take the compressor out and flush the entire system (there is a tool and solvent for this). install the new compressor and take it back and have them recharge with oil and dye.
