Default CAI causes check engine light

Is it normal for the addition of a cold air intake to cause a check engine light to come on? Do I need to somehow recalibrate something like the mass air flow sensor for the increased airflow?

you should have searched. and posted more information about what year scion you drive and what kind of intake you put on.

anyway, most frequent fixes are resetting the car by disconnecting and reconnecting the battary, or cleaning off the maf sensor if it got dirty.

You have an 07, right? If so, did you get an intake especially for the 07? You should have had fitment issues if so, but never hurts to ask.

If you damage the maf or do not get it sealed properly, that will cause a CEL as well.

But first thing is always to read the codes and see what it is trying to tell you.

engifineer you're a smart person lol. Yeah mine is 07 and yeah I did have a problem with the mass air flow sensor fitting cause the pipe wasn't designed for the proper direction. I did make it work though I didn't get it to seal...so a seal is nessicary? Could I just use something like silicone to seal the small opening around the sensor?

You could try, but I cant garauntee this will fix it. But yes, a seal is needed for it to operate properly.

I would start by trying to find the right CAI. If the MAF is not situated properly it will not work either.

make sure the MAF sensor is positioned just like it was on the stock pipe. also make sure it goes just as far into the pipe as stock. and last, just run a very thin bead of silicone around the flange to make sure it seals.

having the proper CAI made for an '07 would be a nice thing as well..

which one did you purchase? where did you purchase? and can you trade/replace it?

I bought the POS on ebay...some random black one. I have positioned the MAS into the correct angle and secured it into place as you can see in the picture below with 3 self tapping screws and a brace (the zip tie is to hold my amp's fuse in place so ignor that). So i guess i'll try the silicone thing tomorrow to seal that thing up

Another eBay victim. You bought an intake that wasn't designed for the '07. Reinstall the stock air cleaner or buy an Injen for the 2007.

"I bought it on eBay" should strike fear in the hearts of tuners everywhere.

I have an ebay intake, and it works wonders. It works just as well as an K&N or Injen. :D
