Default Catback or Axleback?

Hey, kind of a newb question here. I've been looking at all kinds of catbacks and axelbacks online. Am I going to notice a huge diff. between an axleback 3" and a catback 2.25"? A lot of HP? What about the sound?

I'd assume that since the Scion is a short-wheelbase car, there wouldn't be much of a difference in HP gain b/w both. Besides, I don't want to spend an extra 2 or 3 hundred bucks on a catback for a mere 2-3 HP gain when I can get an axle-back for that much cheaper.

Frankly, I only like the sound of an aftermarket exhaust since I'm sick of my factory one so I don't plan on spending that much money on one (hence an axle-back). On the other hand, catbacks do give a louder noise. Besides, isn't the catback bad for emmisions?

GIVE ME SOME HELP!!!

Oh yeah, still on a newbie question, would I need an S-pipe for either exhaust?

If all you are interested in is the difference in sound, then just go with a nice axle-back like HKS or TRD. A nice catback design should provie a little more HP and should be on your list if you plan to get the most out of your engine.

And no, you do not NEED the S-Pipe, but it will increase performance if that is what you are after.

yeah you will notice a great drop in hp and tq if you go with a 3" so stick with a 2.5 or 2.25

and also like stated above a axle back is fine no realy large diffrance in running with a catback since its all mandral bent except the spipe any ways

a spipe back might help though if you remove the cat and get a better resonator

How ricer does it sound with a fartpipe and axleback exhaust though? I just got mine and Im affriad to put any larger pipe son it because it already sounds kind high pitched and similar to a civic.

If I do an axle back on mine I plan to use the piping but buy a better sounding muffler like a dynomax or magnaflow. The fireball coffee can mufflers make any car sound bad. Just my opinion.

I agree with aarontrini85, you definately don't want to go TOO big, and the stock setup for axleback is great for added HP and decent sound, depending on what muffler your choose... I like the magnaflow setup... and stylis has a good axleback based of that platform... at precisionmuffler.com

I remember there were a couple of posts of the different sounds of each exhaust including the PrecisionMuffler one, which I'm looking into as we speak. Does anybody have any links for those exhaust sounds?

3" would result in too much pressure drop. youd be losing too much torque and HP....2.25" is good enough for our 4 banger. doesn't seem like ur gonna turbo or anything. if sound is all you want, just go with an axleback

Yeah, unless you're planning to do some kind of forced induction in the next year or two, stick with 2.25", but throw down for a true cat-back.
