Check Engine Light Just Come On
Hey all. I cleaned up my tC about 2 months ago and have only been driving it on short trips around town (not that it would matter) but this morning my check engine light came on. I crunk up the car, went inside to let it warm up, and when I came back out and started out of the driveway the light came on. I don't think it would matter, but my low tire pressure light and maintenance light (need to change oil) was on already, before the check engine light came on. The car drives fine, nothing odd going on. I'm going out in a few mins to take my gas cap off and re-tighten it, hoping that may be the culprit. Can anybody shed some light on this for me, some suggestions? Could this be a sensor that has went bad? The car has about 66,500 miles on it. Thanks in advance!
Would ya'll recommend I take it to Advance Auto or Auto Zone and let them hook up a code reader? I've heard of ppl doing this in the past and it seems like a short time afterwards their cars always have more issues that they'd never had before having the code reader hooked up.
to read the code is in NO way ever going to effect you getting more check engine lights. It is a free service to get the code so you can fix the problem, and turn off the light. More lights will come on, get the code fix the problem.
Autozone won't turn off the check engine light for you, it's on for a reason and they don't want to risk liability. They will however, give you the code so we can possibly help you torubleshoot this. It could be as simple as the MAF sensor being dirty, a bad PCV valve, or a loose clamp on the intake. Don't take it to the dealer, they will charge you an hour of labor at $100 for the same exact thing to read the code. To buy a reader only costs $65.
I don't know autozones policy, but at o'rieillys they take my drivers license and give me the scanner I check the code and it gives the option to turn off the light. Easy.
I went to my local Advance Auto. The reader said something about the emissions system having a leak. I took my gas cap off, tightened it back, they turned off the light and (of course) didnt come back on yet. It was only like 2 miles from Advance to where I am now. I hope the light stays off.
Try to do a web search for P0465. Here's what I got back on ScionLife:
ODBII Codes
P0465 is Purge Flow Sensor Circuit Malfunction, so I'm guessing it's something to do with the purge flow sensor. I'm guessing there's a charcoal canister on the tC where the sensor would be located, I've got an xB so not 100% familiar. It's usually by the gas tank underneath the car, a little balck box with some hoses and an electrical connector. I beleive if you overfill the gas tank a lot it might contaminate the canister. Not sure if it can be dried out or if a new one would be needed.

It's a relativly inexpensive tool that does more then codes.
I constantly monitor water temp, intake temp, mpg's and voltage with mine.
Should you ever pop a code... bingo you can find out immediatly and bypass the auto stores all together...
