Default Circuit City install..part 2.... throwing the CEL

Well,

I took my tc back to CC and had them rewire my entire setup with 0 and 4 gauge from knukoncepts. I also had them install Sirius satalite radio. Everything went well with only minor bumps... Then they reconnect the battery. The check engine light is on.... My response was that ill drop it off at the dealer and it probably isnt anything big, they just bumped a wire. Then i tried to drive off. As soon I hit 3500 rpms, the engine started to spudder hard and then shutoff. It is almost like some strange rev limiter has kicked in. I managed to get it to the dealership w/o stalling. I just had to keep the rpms real low. The only performance mods ive done has been a Weapon R Secret Weapon intake and having the stock muffler cut of and a generic japanesse one tacked on. I didnt think that either of these could cause this kind of problems. Anyways, ill let you all know what happens. If you all have any ideas, let me know or pm me

Thats why i like doing installs myslef. I hate when other people touch my car, especially if you dont know what theyre doing to it.

Fuel cut off at 3500rpm? hmmm.... cmon engine guys.

they could have cut/shorted a wire somewhere along the line that would effect fuel pump/injectors. I guess we will see.

Sounds like a bad A/F Sensor (header) or bad MAF Sensor (intake) and the car is stuck in safe mode. If CC is at fault, stick them with the bill.

Does the same issue occur when you disconnect your aftermarket power cable from your battery to your amplifier system. Sounds like a short or blown fuse... have CC check ALL of your fuses.

Might want to post a link to this thread into the "electrical and interior" forum. Probably an electrical issue is causing your engine problems.

There shouldn't be electrical issues when the battery is disconnected because it only resets the ECU anyway. It sounds like a bad MAF, although it could be sometime else. The engine is definately running in safe mode, preventing you from reving higher and possibly damaging the engine. I'm surprised they didn't use a scan tool and tell you the instant you dropped it off. It takes about a minute to diagnose, and if it's a MAF, only 5 more minutes to fix. Good luck. BTW - The MAF lists for about $140, so prepare to stick CC with the bill. I'm a Best Buy man myself lol, so I'm against Circuit on this one...

run a power wire for a amp and get a bad air sensor? sounds a bit fishy.

Everyone does, but in a case like this it's probably best that he let someone else do it Now if it's Circuit City's fault they are stuck with the bill and not Smoses

UPDATE:

got the car back. The CEL was triggered by the air sensor going bad. The dealership warrented it as a one time deal. They blamed my Weapon R Secret Weapon Intake. They said that oil from the filter had covered the sensor and caused it to go bad. I was a little concerned about this bs response from them. I asked them if put the AEM filter on my intake, then i would be covered because it was a filter used on their Cold Air Intake that they offer. He said NO. Any product not made by trd even if the dealer sells it is not warrented by toyota and considered aftermarket. Therefor if the sensor goes bad due to oil from a filter, then its on me.

Just to be safe, i think im going to look into finding some unoiled filters.... the only alternative to that is a turbo, and at this point i think my gf would kill me if I tossed a stage 1 zpi on it.

BTW: While there are some aspects im not too thrilled about. The system sound VERY nice and get VERY loud. I am a little skeptic that circut city really wired the sub at one ohm... however, i dont really want to mess with anything now that everything is working well.

by the way... i dont really buy the oil excuse. Im thinking that CC fried the MAF. On the repair bill they just said they found oil residue or something within 3 inches of the maf.

multiple Intake owners have had a sim. problem..read some of the links. I'm in the car audio biz and shops get the blame for everything. Not saying that some times a shop does cause a problem but it is amazing how much crap un-related ya get nailed for.

While it's true that was kind of a bad decision, there are ways around it. You can make Circuit City pay for it.

I could see that too. Any time you work around custom cars, something is bound to go wrong, and usually the owner blames the shop, the shop blames the owner...

I had Best Buy do a full audio system install today. Alpine head unit, 2 6" type R's, 2 12 type R's and 2 V12 amps. As im driving off i notice the CEL is on so i turn around and ask them whats up? They have no clue so i take it straight to auto zone and have them do a quick check. They say its showing that its running lean. I plan on taking it to the dealer but its kind of funny how i get the car back from best buy with the CEL on.
