Default Cleaning 02 Sensors

How would you all suggest cleaning them? Both the wideband in the exhaust manifold, and the narrow in the spipe? Im thinking brake cleaner, but that is a harsh chemical, and I dont want it to damage the sensors.

Advise and links to back up your advise please (cause like i said, im not trying to dish our hundreds for new sensors).

Thanks

yeah, i'd say MAF/electrical sensor cleaner is probably better than either brake cleaner or carb/choke/tb cleaner.

though i don't know why you'd need/want to clean 02 sensors.

Whats wrong with your sensor anyways that you need to clean it? I did a quick google to see how to clean one and came up with a lot of different responses. With one of them being get a propane torch and heat the crap out of it the reinstall it back. But usually what I found is people just buy a new one.
Don't worry about SePTc anyways he trolls everywhere...
Quoted a logical explanation I found:
First of all. It's not whether it can or can't be cleaned. Anything can be cleaned, if you go about it right. The question should be, first of all, whether cleaning it would do any good, and if so, whether it needs to be cleaned. Oxygen sensors are exposed to such extreme heat that the only thing that it can get (dirty) with is carbon. Extreme heat will turn any organic matter, such as gasoline or oil, into carbon. Well the bad thing about that, is that baked carbon is not soluble in any kind of solvent, and even if it was, the sensing unit within the o2 sensor module, is not exposed, and is not visible. It is covered by what is usually a louvered steel cylinder. Therefor if you're going to brush it, use a wire brush and brush it as hard as you want, because it isn't going to hurt the steel cover. But this is the problem. The only thing that you can really clean with any success is the outer cover. Since solvents won't do any good, I really would not recomend using electric motor cleaner, since the active indredient in it is Trichloroethylene which is not a very strong solvent. not only is it's strength very low, but also, since it is designed to clean electronic components, it evaporates very rapidly, resulting in a very short working time.
Since o2 sensors are disigned to hande such extreme temeratures. The best method of cleaning them, is to heat the bottom part of the sensor (the part that inserts into the exaust) with a propane torch, to the point that it just begins to turn red. You do not want it to glow chery red, even though they are designed to take extreme heat, you can still over do it. Once you have it heated to the point that is just turns red, or to the point just befor it turns red, quench it in water. This will break free any carbon build up inside the sensor. After the first time, some pieces may still be to big to come out of the sensor so I would recomend doing it 2 to 3 times, blowing it out with an air compressor between each time. But I would have to say, good luck, since O2 sensors very seldom fail do to being dirty. This is not common at all.

im not sure anything is wrong with them, but here is why i think they might be dirty, clogged, etc.

i installed a wideband a/f, im running ideal, but more on the lean side (high 14's, low-mid 15's), but im getting HORRIBLE gas milage (19-20mpg). my air filter is clean, and ive used lucas fuel injector cleaner. so im thinking the sensors are dirty (the wideband) and causing something to throw off the a/f ratio. but what confuses me is... if im running more lean, shouldnt i be conserving gas and getting BETTER gas milage? its confusing me... so im trouble shooting basically.

Heres the 3m product:
CLICKHERE
and I quote from there "Oxygen sensor safe".

Anyways....
Your AF says you are running lean....but horrible gas mileage should say you are running rich, just dumping fuel.
Checked spark plugs lately? Coils still good? Blue flames out the exhaust (LOL)?

haha @ blue flames. no.

the coilpacks should be fine, and the spark plugs was another one of my guesses. but im just under 60k, so the plugs should be ok, but changing them now wont hurt.

and exactly. with my bad gas milage i should be running more on the rich side but im not. thats why im confused

Testing your AFR sensor, just need a multimeter:

https://www.scionlife.com/tech/manual/?manual=tc05_1348

It's probably fine, since you're not throwing a CEL, but if it tests good you can at least cross the AFR sensor off your list ...

ya, test your sensor with a DMM, if it tests ok then your good and your problem is somewhere else. anyway, to clean it i would use a propane torch, brake cleaner will only get the soot off the surface. a hot flame will burn it all off, then just blow the rest of what is left over off.
