The engine is internally balance but has a torsional vibration damper on the pulley.

I'll warn you now: this has been a long and bitter debate with knowledgeable people on both sides making informed and long-winded arguments. That being said, there is no reward without risk. As with any engine mod, you'll either free up some horsepower... or you'll damage your engine beyond repair. Make an informed decision and prepare to deal with the results.

I've been using NST pulleys for a few years now, their products rock and the people there are very cool folks. I have never had any problems of any kind.

Here are a few links for your reading pleasure. These have both for and against arguments in them:

There are internal pieces in the engine to help balance the motor. The "damper" in the crank pulley is a thin rubber band more for noise reduction than anything else. The avergae 40 year old Toyota owner cares about having a comfy point A to B car, not a performance machine. This has a lot to do with why Toyota builds cars the way they do. Toyota cares about sales and making profits, not necessarily about building the best performance car on the market or cars that will last for 300,000 miles.
