Default Creative Compacts Short-Throw Shifter Review, Multi-Part

Read posts 9,10,14 for my more in depth review.

Well I just got my short throw in, and to be honest Im not 100% pleased, but we will see how I feel after the install. It took 1 month to recieve, because it was on backorder, which took them a week to notify me (not note on thier website or in the check out section) then they didnt ship mine out for 4 days once they came back in stock, and then USPS lost the package, and it took one week to recieve once it was shipped. Great.

Promotion tuning however, Im not happy with thier customer service, and for whatever reason there is a little bit of rust on the welds? What is that about. Also there is no parts list, or instructions included.

Thats mostly why I am creating this thread. I have what is obviously the short throw, some sort of retainer, some new washers and bolts, and what appears to be 4 housing bushings, allthough I was not aware these bushings were included. But no instructions... no parts list to explain what all I actually have.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I dont really want to call PMTuning AGAIN as their customer service IMO is not that good.

the purple circle things are new base bushings, the bolts replace the stock base bolts. the short shifter you know already. and the ****.

ooo and the circle piece of metal with a slot chopped out. that's used to take the plastic piece off the end of the stock shifter rod.

check out the TWM shifter install in teh tech section, you have to follow the same directions.

I dont want to start an argument or anything like that, but i ordered the CC short shifter from Pro-motion tuning as well. I ordered it on Friday and it shipped to my door on thursday.

I thought their customer service was pretty good being that I called on that monday after I orderd to check the shippin and the person who picked up, checked my order right away and told me it would be at my door in 2-3 days, and he was correct.

As for the install, I followed the TWM short shifter install, and it was a breeze imo. My review is I really like the shorter throw, I feel like I won't misshift because shifter play is almost eliminated, and also the look. The only problem is, is that it is a lil hard, but I have read on here that it is supposed to be, but I am goin to go back and lubricate the ball joints a little bit more.

Good luck though, I wish I could help more....

Default Product Review - Product Pre-Installation/Customer Service

As promised, a multi part review.

I did the research here on SL on which short throw I wanted, and I liked the TWM however it seemed to me that the CC (or PMT, since they are one in the same) was essentially a design knock off of the TWM, and in my opinion for a rod with a ball and some threads, the knock off is acceptable.

I went to ProMotion Tunings website and found it very easy to use, went through paypal. So far so good.

Then the problems began. After the order was processed, I never recieved any sort of confirmation. I ordered the product on Nov 20th. I ended up calling on the 28th, because that day (8 days later) I recieved an email saying that the product was on back order.

My problem here? 8 Days to notify? EIGHT DAYS? Not to mention, why wasnt a back order notification on the website when the product was ordered and payed for? Also, there never was a back-order notice placed on the website during the back order period, even after I pointed that fact out to them.

They told me the product would come in around the 8th and arrive at my door on the 11th. Well on the 9th I still recieved no shipping information or tracking numbers, so I called them. The customer service rep simply told me that all of the short throws had shipped and I would receive it when they said. Come monday. No short throw. I call and the response is something like this "Oh yes I remember you called let me check on that for you. Oh (audible laughing) whoops looks like we didnt ship yours out, sorry! (audible laughing). Ill tell you what Ill ship this out TWO DAY AIR for you."

So Im thinking, hey, good atleast it will be here on the 13th, wednesday. Nope. I get a confirmation number, and it turns out they sent it through the US Postal Service via Priority, not 2 Day Air as I was told on the phone. They sent it USPS in December. Less than two weeks before Christmas. Not a very smart practice in my opinion, and now I was anxious... and very correct as USPS misshipped my package and I did not receive it untill the 18th. Thats 29 days. TWENTY NINE DAYS.

Needless to say Im less than pleased with thier customer service.

Upon receiving the package (which I knew what to expect from another thread) I wasnt very impressed, but just glad to have the product. I then opened it up and noticed a bit of rust around the welds and on the shaft near the welds, and that leads me to believe that the product is not:

As aluminum doesnt rust, plus the shifter is very heavy compared to the stock shifter. Other than that the product was ok, but realistically, theres not much to mess up.

Install Review to come, as well as Product Post-Install, but right now I need to go to work.

Default Product Review - Instructions/Ease of Installation

Well, instructions are NOT included, and to add to the Cust Service fiasco, I call requesting a parts list and instructions (knowing full well I can get them on here, more to see the response) and I got essentially "Go to our competitor's (TWM) website, and use thier write up." Gee, thanks... way to use your competetor's **** and market it as your own.

Anyways, the installation was pretty straight forward. I ran into the typical problems everyone had, with the locking washer on the shifter-ball-joint pin. (not the technical name hah, just mine for it) The lower cap that everyone says is impossible to take off came real easy actually. Its a simple process for the most part, just slightly time consuming when you have to deal with the little pins and clips.

As a bit of advice, when you go to remove the locking washer, find a tool (I had one, no idea what it was called) that can come at the washer on both sides, it will make the process VERY easy.

Default Product Review - Product Post-Installation

And time for the test drive!

Well upon getting the shifter in place (well greased mind you) I took it for a drive before putting everything back together, to make sure there was no problems with the install, and if there was I already had the center console out to correct any changes.

She shifter is noticeable stiffer, but that is true of all short throws, as there is less leverage on your end so a little more effort is required. But this is also a good thing, as the shifts are more confident.

To be quite honest, Im a lazy stick driver sometimes and occasionally drag my hand to long while being to quick with the foot, (causing a grind) and this will no longer be a problem as the throw is noticeably shorter and pretty much perfect in my opinion. I also regularly had issues "hitting a wall" into 4th, but during quick shifting and casual shifting. So far I havent noticed a glimpse of this.

All and all, function wise, Im very happy with the shifter. It does exactly what its designed to do at a low cost.

Next thing though, and I recommend this to anyone that can get thier hands on it (not hard to do) is I am going to flush the fluid and replace with Mercon III which is actually a Ford AT Fluid, but has properties that are fine for lubing the bearings and such in the trans that require the lubrication, yet since it is a thinner fluid emulates a dry area for the synchros. This is good because synchros would actually function better if they were ran dry as due to thier design they mesh instantly, however with fluid involved, they have to also push the fluid out before meshing. The Mercon III eliminates this.

or redline trans fluid? that's what a lot of people recommend. check out this thread if anyone's interested.

Already know about it... but ideally the best combination is 50/50 Merc/RL ...but I get the Merc free so Ill stick with that for now.

A buddy of mine has the 50/50 set up in his MazdaSpeed Miata (notorious for grinding gears, my best friend has one as well, 3rd and 4th gear synchros went out around 1600 miles) and also is pushing a bit of power and the trans feels totally different, atleast as far as resistance and grinding. Hes been in the automotive industry for years and knows his ish too.

well i got the shifter in tonight! the install was a little challenging but i got it. nothing i couldn't handle. it took maybe an hour or so.

i didn't drive the car w/o the center console back together but i put the **** on and shifted it through the gears with the center off and my first impression is "WOW these shifts are short" then "wow this thing is stiff".

so i threw it all back together, drove around and i absolutly love it. the throws are so short and precise and there is almost no play AT ALL. i really can't see myself missing shifts or grinding gears at all anymore. althought i was at a stop sign and thought i had put the car in 1st but it turned out to be third. i'm just not used to it yet.

i also have the Ingalls Stiffy and the NST shifter cable bushings along with the shifter. my whole setup feels perfect. the only thing left to do now is change the tranny fluid to the Redline, but i'll probably wait to do that till i install an intake. i heard it's easier to do with the intake piping off.

so over all i was a little shocked to not see directions come with mine either but i didn't need them. i read the how-to on here then just did it. i ordered the thing on monday and had it today so it did come quick and everything else customer service wise was good. i totally recomend this shifter, the price is great and the product so far is awesome.
