Can I mix 10W-40 with 10W-30 and/or 5W30?? Does anyone know?
I use the mobil 1 synthetic with the mobil filter.....A friend of mine used the same oil in his toyota truck from the day he purchased it years and years ago....he now has 450,000 miles on the truck and still runs great. Thats what sold me on using the mobil 1.
yea thats good to hear . but alot of people are not using mobil1 oil anymore. Due to something i dont really know about so dont be mad, but from what ive heard mobil changed the way their oil has been processed recently.seems like they are slackin off.
Mobil1 is no longer being made based on a group4 PAO base stock, but now a group 3 base stock like all the other "synthetic" oils that are made from hydrocracking conventional crude oil base. Oils using group 3 base stock also include: Walmart's Supertech synthetic and most other "synthetic oils". So, the if M1 is truely "better" these days, it would probably be due to the additives. That is, IF.
This is all thanks to Castrol when they called their Group3 Syntec a synthetic and then won the lawsuit M1 threw at them. Everybody jumped on the boat following that lawsuit.

Better is subjective. But I consider 4 and 5 true synthetic, and 3 psudo-synthetic. But I do consider a lot group 3 oils not worth their premium price.
There's actually Cheveron Supereme / Havoline Conventional (same stuff with almost the same additives) that's Group 2+, in which would be probably almost as good as most group 3 oils.
At the end of the day, even if you change every 3000-5000 miles using Supertech Conventional oil (cheapest on the shelf), your toyota engine made today would still be spotless (except varnish, which is harmless in general) at 500k miles. Cars today have good engines, what you have to worry about would be other part not holding up.
I haven't payed attention to redline for a while, but from what I remember, redline, certain syntec (aka "German Castrol"), and amsoil are Group4.

Does anyone put fresh oil in the filter before bolting it up to the block? I know it is not possible on all cars but I noticed with the orientation of the filter on the tC it would be possible. Anyone care to chime in on that?
lol of course u put fresh oil in the filter, or atleast lube the gasket? but actually pouring a little oil inside the filter, No biggy i put a little. Some people put more. but yeah itz common.
Yeah, I fill mine up all the way to the end of the threads in the center hole. That way its not above the threading but its not too far below it either. I think its like a quarter of a quart to fill the OEM Toyo filter all the way up. Don't really have to worry about dry starting the engine if you do fill the filter up.
I fill it half full and screw it on. Yes oil would go in there anyways, but when you firsst crank the engine after the oil change, there won't be oil in there, and so it will be cranking dry.
The engine takes oil directly from the filter.

this is a pretty good write up. makes things really easy for those new to oil changes. this car is hella easy to change the oil in.
i just got finished changing my oil, I was about 3-4k miles over the recommended change,
. feels good now

Wow great info SSQ! I get the cheap huge jugs of Mobile 1 at Walmart. It sucks what that lawsuit has done, but totally agree as long as you change the oil before its scheduled interval, it should be fine for a daily driver.
Maybe I should start using Royal Purple if I autox?

What happens if you dont use a crush washer? Ive changed my oil 3-4 times already and never used a crush washer, I dont think the dealer used one when I got 3 free oil changes.
Never saw one even when I did the first oil change.

There should be one that came with your car, check to see if it's attached to the oil pan or the plug. The purpose of the crush washer is to take some force from the tightening to lessen the risk of stripping the thread on the oil pan and to provide a better seal.
Even if you don't use one, you are fine. Just make sure IF you decide to use one, make sure there isn't one that's already stuck to the oil pan or the plug, or else you will see a pretty good puddle under your car.
