Do I really need a pulley removal tool to take my stock pulley off when I install my lightweight crank pulley?

I have been searching the forums and I saw where one guy used a crowbar. Is this safe, or should I bite my lip and pay the $90 rental fee at advance auto parts?

 

Just an opinion, since I dont have much knowledge on the topic but...couldnt you just have it installed for nearly the same price? Even if its 20-40 bux more atleast they'll have to give you a guarantee on their work.

 

That should be a refundable deposit. Right?

 

I like doing my own work mainly because I don't trust shops around here. I feel more confident in my own work.

 

I really don't know if it is refundable or not. I will check on it. I'm just trying to find the easiest and cheapest way to do it but still be safe about it.

 

It is, once they get the tool back, they will return your money.

 

Hold On why do you need a pulley removal tool???? Are you doing this by hand or what?????? I am just curious because just got my pulley in and I'm about to install it but I don't have any air tools can we do this by hand???? maybe with a cheater bar????

 

you should be able to just slide it off but if not, 2 prybars will do the trick.

Deviousjet: you can do this by hand but i my self feel safer using a gun.

I would think you would be lacking space to do it with a breaker bar, but I don't know. If you have the money and if you are going to be doing more modifications to your car, I would recommend going ahead and getting air tools and an air compressor. They make life a lot easier.

I'm probably going to install mine tonight. I found a better price for the rental of a pulley puller.

 

you do not have a harbor freight near you?? pulley removal tool is cheap there.

and yeah its best to do it with an air gun, i really dont think anyone can torque it tight enough by hand, you dont want your pulley to fly off on the freeway

 

Ok. It turns out that I didn't need to rent the tool, even though I did just in case. The pulley slid right off just using my hands.

 

Whiteshirt, how u got got the pulley off. did u use air tool?

 

Yeah. I used my impact wrench. I couldn't budge it with hand tools.

 

auto zone pulley remover is 35 bucks rented or bought.

 

I really don't think you need a pulley remover. Mine just slid right off.

 

An impact wrench is the practical way for removing the bolt, damn near impossible with hand tools. As for the pulley removal, it you need to pry it off, something is probably wrong. It should just slide right off.

 

if you have to pry it off it doesn't mean theres something wrong, its a tight fit and sometimes they get rusted on. if your car is pretty new it will probably come right off, you might just have to work it a bit tho.
