One thing an auto can't do: shift into fifth.
The main reason I go with manual is the gearing is a lot more conducive to acceleration; the automatic is not suited for "hardtime acceleration." I need that acceleration... I feel insecure without it.

NOPE!
All that matters is that I can control the shifting... and go fast.. and control it.. and shift for myself.. and go fast.. and shift.. CONTROL!
I need my control.
(you know, the problem with trying to tell a joke like this is that with smileys the joke doesn't get through but without the smileys people aren't sure it's a joke.. oh well, it's a JOKE. I'm not insecure without acceleration or else I'd never drive my 93hp Saturn)
But honestly, after driving the manual and then trying out the auto, the auto feels very lacadaisical and slothenly. This is where that extra mile per gallon comes in but it's only one extra mile. That costs me $2.50 extra ideally but by driving smart I'll be able to extend that 29 miles - highway.
That'll lose me of that acceleration that I so need but I don't need it.
(ugh...

i still believe its not good for the transmission. yes it does wear your transmission.
downshifting should mainly be used if your towing something. you need that extra power to pull.
ive done this with my 97 civic and my transmission messed up.. the car kept stalling and i couldnt do nothing about it, sometimes i have to downshift in order to stay in speed limit because my car would choke. so my dads friend hooked us up and replace the whole transmission from a 96 civic. it still suffers some problems but i dont drive it anymore, i hate it.
i also messed up my sister 98 prelude. just downshifting for more power when i wanted to race someone. then when my sister drove it the car suddenly shut itself off. PLUS i barely drove her car! and all the sudden it messes up. the honda dealer said the transmission is messed up and it costed 3000 to fix the problem. i dont like automatic, some reason i have bad luck with them.
an automatic is all computerized, you shouldnt change what it does normally. its all programed and your changing what an automatic should do, and its like changing the automatics settings. you see muscle cars race? they dont downshift. just stomp the gas and the automatic will respond how fast you wanna go.
automatic are slow. when you stomp the gas how much rpm does it go to before it shifts? probably 5.3rpm... it programmed to stay whats safe for the car

Whatever man, you dont have to believe me, were talking about toyota's here, not honda's or anything else. You can always check out what the manufacturer says about manual shifting an automatic by looking in your owners manual.

check this automatic is all computerized it does not know what the speed limit is so it stays within gear intill you increase the speed. if your going 30 mph an autmatic would probably be in 2nd gear at 2.7 rpm. with manual you got full control, 30mph i stay in 3rd gear goin 2.3rpm... automatics are programmed to reach to a certain rpm before shifting.
when you bought your car did you check that label on the window? at the bottom it say about driver witness between 18-30mpg with a MANUAL. notice the do not mentioned about automatics
also i can keep staying at low rpms when i shift. i can shift each gear when i hit 2rpm. unlike automatic it is programmed to go up about how much? 2.7rpm? its gonna go up to that point not matter what. your gas pedal has no control over the transmission.
and i dont feel like fixing the error here, so bare with me

look at edmunds.com and you will see that a manual can only get 29mpg tops, while an auto can get 30mpg. Dont believe me? Check out the site yourself.
Also, I can make my auto shift from first gear up to 4th gear without ever going above 2K rpm. It might take a while, and the road will have to be completely flat, but I can make it shift gears at different rpm's depending on how hard I press the accelerator down.

how can you make it from 1st gear 4th on your own? you cant shift up. if you ride trying to stay 2rpm then your just holding up traffic. auto is gonna slowy rev up intill its required to shift.
on edmunds.com they just mentions automatics city/highway thats just an estimate for normal drivers. manual has an estimate too but it quotes on the paper at the window of the range people who drove it on manual expirenced. overall manual saves more gas than auto, period
also when i mention 23mpg im talkin about the city! there no way an auto getting 30mpg on a city. a manual go up to18- 29mpg on the city!

[/b][/quote]ASK ANYONE ON THIS SITE ABOUT THIS!!
And no your car doesn't get 29 in the city.
You do not need to fsck with the shifter In all (most) automatics if you floor the gas (all the way till it dont go down no' more) it will automatically downshift so you can pass, i think it was added as a safety feature.
In my moms 2002 Accord V6 Auto, when I want to pass people i have to floor it all the way, when I do it downshifts to 3rd and the rpms jump to about 4500 and on up to 6k. When I gas it almost to the floor the RPMs go up fast, but there is no downshift. (its fun on the accord cause the damn VTEC only has power at bout 5000+ rpms
