Default engine knocking

my odometer just rolled over 6000 miles...and my engine has started making a faint knocking/taping noise at idle...is this normal with a 4cyl engine or is this something I need to confront the dealership about before I go voiding my warrenty with a turbo kit??

yeah, take it before you go turbo or they will just blame the turbo for your engine trouble.

All that tapping and noise is just the valvetrain, toyota motors tend to run with a noisy valve train, my tc has 17k on it and its sounded the same since i broke it in. Its normal, the only time you should worry if its tapping loudly or knocking while accelerating. our motors are noisy but i think Toyota motors are the best in the world!!!!

If you recently had an oil change that may be the problem. Take it to the dealer and have them check it out.

mine ticks really loud, when i drive though an alley its annoying. I had it taken to the dealer 4 times and all 4 times they took the head apart and replaced the valve shims. This made the ticking go away for 3 to 4 weeks but then it came right back. On the 5th time they said its normal and it doesn't need to be fixed, then why did they fix it the first 4 times? I like toyota but I think their dealers suck. And i still have an annoying ticking that I wouldn't mind getting rid of, but I have learned to accept.

If it bothers you that bad, increase the weight of your oil

All i can ssay is, that its normal, toyota motors are made to run like that. There is nothing wrong with your motor. Increasing the weight of ur oil isnt good to do. It wont really help anything, the noise will still be there. Our motors are performance built, theyre not made exactly like they are in the camry. The head runs loose for high RPM revs. If the head ran tight itd be more likely to blow the ____ up. My valves tap all the time, sometimes not as much if i baby the motor. Try changing ur driving habits if ur driving the car hard.

Ive heard the same but only when i floor it, all i can tell you is to just drive it, keep your oil changed, and if it blows ur warranty should pay for it. That is if you have the extended drive train warranty like i do. It covers everything in the motor, from the gaskets all the way down to the bolts that hold the _____ together.

Hm, cool. Mine started making this noise after I put on my Agency Pulley, and I thought the pulley was making the noise. It sounds unhealthy as hell, and it's even more annoying because I also have a '91 240SX that has the "knock of death", so all of my engines are noisy now.
