You might have ran over something and it hit the hot exhaust pipe and stuck to it

Exactly. I bet anything you ran over a plastic bag of some sort.. and the heat melted the plastic to your exhaust. This has happened to me on my stock exhaust.. it looks really weird but is of no harm.

It doesnt have to scrape anything. like B_Real said it was probably a plastic grocery bag that you ran over and it blew up onto your exhaust and melted. It could have been Styrofoam. Just because you dont scrape doesnt mean stuff wont bounce up into it.

Yeah i have my money on a plastic grocery bag flew up under it, maybe on the freeway and melted onto it a litttle. I run paper and trash like that on the freeways all the time.
I'm sure it can be scraped off if you're really worried about it. Get an sos pad and lightly brush it off.

it's melted something.. very likely it was a plastic bag... and then the melted goo caused dirt and stuff to stick to it.

yep, as everyone is saying most likey a grocery bag that got attached to your pipe. this happened to me before.

i just let the plastic bag burn itself out - took about 2-3 weeks for it to completely burn off.

do you smell a "burning plastic" smell when you get out off your car after driving around for a bit?
