Default General Turbo Q's...

Hello,

I just had a few questions about turboing a tC..

1. Do you need special oil?

2. Should you let your car idle for 1min everytime after you drive before turning it off (i will do this manually, without a turbo timer, if you need to)?

3. Is there a point in having a BOV in an auto tC?

4. Lets say i just installed my turbo, ic, everything is ready, even the eManage i will use, and i put in the proper oil... Am I set to go, is it safe to rev the engine right after i finished the install? Looking at boost, afr, and egt guages, and maybe oil pressure?

5. I probably wont get an oil pressure guage (is that okay?) and am not going wideband for the afr guage, is that ok too?

Thanks!
mike

1. nothing special maybe just a higher viscosity.
2. no idea but retained boost in an engine and piping can never be good.
3. yes
4.id take it easy to be safe. it would be a sad day to blow your engine after getting F/I
5. no clue

It's just as easy to drive, if not easier, but it'll only take a sec to spool up depending on which kit you buy. The BOV wont go off on an Auto until you let off the gas. Keep in mind its not for the sound, it's to relieve the charge pipe of a stressful (high high psi) amount of air that would normally riochet back at your turbo as soon as the throttle body closes.

Give the car a couple minutes to warm up when you start it if it hasne't been run for a while. It'll add to the life of your piston rings in the long run. Let it idle for a min or two after driving for a while to use the oil feed line to help cool the turbo off, increasing life. To properly setup a new turbo, disconnect your coils and crank the motor a few times. This will get oil into your turbo before it starts spinning. It's a quick trick that should help in the long run. Note, you only have to do this once. Once that's done, there's really no wait, get on it and have fun.

As for the Oil psi gauge, it's not completely neccessary but it does help. If it drops you know your oil feed to the turbo is leaking and can shut down the motor before you blow the turbo or seize the engine. The AFR is great, but once it's tuned, you should be ok. Just take it to the shop once in a while to make sure everything's running correctly.

Hope that helps.

yeah thats what auto GTI's do. Gas it up hard in low gear and release the gas. Sounds just like a BOV if not better. but when racing its pretty silent.

Just a quick FYI, I'm sure you know, but depending on when you're planning to buy, our turbo kits should be available next month. Thanks.

No, high quality synthetic works fine.

Yes. What this does is circulates the oil to cool the turbo down. It helps lengthen the life of your turbo.

Stay out of boost until you're tuning it. Once you're done tuning it I would drive for 1k miles to break in the turbo.

It's ok not to have an oil gauge as long as you're confident you're keeping oil pressure.

And as long as you get the car tuned correctly, you won't need a AF gauge. The narrowband AF gauge's are just blinky lights anyways. They're not accurate enough to really rely on.

they're tuning it "safe" which means a little richer than normal. you should be fine with that but you may want to have a single dyno pull to get your AFR on paper, and have a pretty little sheet of paper to post online
