You live in CA... no, nothing is legal, to my knowledge.

Any aftermarket headers remove the first cat... so emissions are different - so CA hates you.

Headers remove the ONLY cat we have so it's not legal anywhere

Actually you still have another cat, but it removes one of the cats. IIRC there is another cat in the S-Pipe.

Anytime you add something that isnt CARB Exempt, you will bend over and take it..... ALL headers for the tC and ALL S-Pipes for tC that Ive seen remove the cat(s)

I don't think that's right... the header one is a pre-cat. The real cat is just after the s/down pipe.

but isnt there a way to add on a cat to the header?

so if i buy a mid pipe and no header, will that effect the emissions?

I thought there were two resonators in the mid pipe not cats and I also thought you want to have your sensors before and after the cat so the mid pipe should have resonators.

Well to my understanding, the first smaller bubble is a cat (the second one)... and the longer one is the resonator.

I could be wrong though... I haven't pulled apart my exhaust or anything to check.

But I think someone else that has replaced their exhaust can tell us for sure. I'm just going by what I've read and researched.

The bulbus section of Part # 17420 is the RESONATOR, the part immediatley before it is the Secondary CAT.

If you live in CA and want an aftermarket header you must:
Keep your Exhaust Manifold HEAT SHIELD, this will conceal any aftermarket header that you put on and give off the appearance of a stock/untampered exhaust system. Then utilize the Anti-Fouler O2 sensor bypass in order to avoid receiving a CEL from your car after the header is installed.

Now if your truly daring ZPI makes a midpipe that deletes the Secondary CAT and Resonator, they recently used it on the PIPES TV show and won their match against a Pontiac FireChicken.

Either way it still seems like it wouldn't pass emissions without a cat

Actually it lists 17420 as that entire midpipe assembly and doesn't seem to break it down any further

*SIGH*
Listen very carefully because I don't want to repeat this.

The tC has TWO, DOS, DOIS, DEUX, NI, 2 Catalytic Converters.

The PRIMARY CAT is part of the OEM exhaust manifold, the SECONDARY CAT is part of the Mid-pipe. It CAN pass most state emissions testing with only ONE of these in working order. The ENTIRE reason that the tC and most other cars have an EXCESSIVE amount of pollution control devices is because of CRAPPYFORNIA and their "**** Air quality Laws" that, BTW do nothing because that state still has the worst air quality in the U.S.

Now commit this to memory, write it down, repeat it to yourself five times, make flash cards or whatever, but do not forget: tC=TWO CATS.

[/End rant]
