I am curious how accurate the horsepower reading feature is on the scangauge II w/ x-gauge? I'm assuming the reading is hp to the crank, and I notice that it changes through the powerband, but I wanted to know if anyone has used this feature and compared it to their dyno sheets.

If it is accurate...what a great product! you can test mods and get results without going to the dyno.

I mean it's hard to read while driving, but I know that I pulled 2nd gear hard and it read 191 but I know I ran the gear out another 600rpm. I was on local roads, so it is hard to test. I'd expect that I am in that range on motor with the work that I have done to it. Maybe later I will find a long on ramp to the interstate and get a passenger to watch it for me.

i sure would like to know if it does works. cuz if it does ill buy one!! but...i still dont see how it would be accurate like a dyno.

It's apparently reading off the ECU or if there is a sensor for the crank. While in neutral at a light is lingers around 4.5hp, slow acceleration in second shows 14hp - 37hp. When laying into 2nd and 3rd gear it tops out around 192hp just before I shift. It updates the hp every half second or so.... so I don't really know how high it hits before I put the clutch in because I gotta watch the road and blink and etc. It was in the 190's at the top of 2nd and 3rd gear.

Other sites with people's reviews seem to say it is accurate. My mods during this playing period are:

I have always felt like my car was a little quicker when it was stock compared to other stock tc's... not much quicker.... but just a little. I'm not sure what the standard deviation is for cars off the assembly line. 190's to the crank seems pretty close to accurate with these mods. I'm gonna try to find a local guy that has a dyno to the crank and see what this reads in their car to compare....just gotta find the time.

i say it's NOT very accurate....every once and a while it tells me i have like 319hp...haha, i wish! if only a CAI can give me that much power...lol

do you have it setup correctly as far as engine size and etc.

Also, recheck the x-gauge code. My readings have been very consistent and haven't seen any crazy jumps like that. I mean... if I saw it jump to 220hp I would think it was off... because I know that I am not that fast on motor with my mods.

Reviving this thread.... Anyone know or check this with a dyno? Mines peaked at 350 one day at my 8 psi with exhaust and nst pulley.

You are A/T at 8psi and it shows 350, even at the crank its wy too high for 8 psi on a/t so i say that gauge reads higher.

i'd say its not accurate. alot of that stuff im finding out isnt accurate.... like my mpg being 998? lol about only stuff i've seen acurate is mph, rpm and cai temp ( im guessing voltage is correct but im running 2 batteries so mine shows 14.1 )

It's not accurate at all. Run the test up hill, then run it down hill. Watch as you magically change from 80hp to 250hp.

Goose, the MPG is actually pretty close if it's calibrated and you keep the same driving habits. Mine was usually +/-1 MPG almost every fill up.

The mileage will also say 999 if you're coasting in gear and the fuel cuts out. It would say "infinity" but it can't. But that's what you'd be getting since you can't divide by 0 gallons being used.

oh ok no wonder it would spike lol. my mpg is usually 25 (if alot of city driving) or about 30/32 if mostly highway and closest its came was like 40 or so; i keep resetting the trip section on it, but hadn't had luck on it

Yeah, you need to reset it after every fill up and play with the settings, I forget how to do it all. But once it's calibrated, it'll be pretty close.

I forgot to reset mine a few times, now I never will because it's saying I'm at -430 gallons...

The HP readout, in my experience is just for fun... I'd be thrilled if I actually got 130HP.

I have my ScanGauge2 up to date with the Xcode that does hp. I'm going to the dyno tomorrow, I'll see what kind of difference there is between a real dyno and the computer dyno....

Well I have good news....I was at the dyno today and actually video recorded the dyno watching the ScanGauge2, have the results from the dyno and ... yea I think thats it....

In the video the BHP will drop to 0.0 before it starts counting up with the dyno. I just thought about it and I should have set the other gauges to MPH and RPM so we could have had some relativity ... sry

The final hp recording is 220. Now the question is.. is ScanGauge reporting Crank HP or Brake HP?

I would say on a flat surface, your going to be within reason to your actual horsepower. Now day to day driving I wouldn't say it is going to be totally accurate, uphill, downhill.... etc.

Aha, I was wondering why the hell the reading was so wack. I have one also, and always wondered why the hp would throw some crazy numbers. I didnt realize that it was calculated when your basically reaching the rev limiter for example doing a 3rd gear dyno run.
