Default Inconsistent Powerband

I've recently noticed that the powerband at anything less than wide open throttle on my tC surges sometimes. I'm not to familiar with VVT or drive by wire cars (came from the DSM world) and thought that it might be an issue with one of those.

Here is what I've noticed. The car pulls fine at WOT but let's say that I'm pulling onto the interstate and I'm at half throttle or three quarter throttle, the car will start to rev up and then the motor starts surging. It almost reminds me of hitting fuel cut repeatedly on a DSM but not as severe. The weird thing about it is that it doesn't do it all the time. It happens maybe 50% of the time that I try it.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help.

Used. The only thing I've noticed that isn't stock is the previous owner cut the shifter down. I've only had the car for a week though so I haven't had a chance to look it over very good.

It may be bogging down because of the gear you are in. The car will be fine coasting at a speed but when you tell it to speed up, the car has to be able to work itself up in the RPMs to get some good power. I don't remember how it feels on a stock tC because I have been riding with poly motor mounts for awhile and I feel everything from the engine.

I'm not new to racing imports. I raced DSMs for a long time and the only reason I was vague about the modifications to the car is because I'm not to familiar with the tC. Stock intake, stock exhaust, no fuel modifications, etc. I was thinking that maybe if there is a small modification to the car like a reflashed ECU or a modification to the VVT system that I missed that could be causing the problem. I've also noticed that the car doesn't have any of the throttle delay problems that some of the members on here have complained about. Could the previous owner have done something there to cause a problem?

When I bought the car I looked it over as best I could. Test drove it and even had another set of eyes there to make sure I didn't miss something. The car drove fine during the test drive and on the way home. I didn't start to notice this problem until I started driving it to work.

I checked the oil before I test drove it and almost every day since I've had it. I haven't checked the air filter yet but I will. I actually forgot that the car was still under warranty so I'm taking it in tomorrow at 4:30. I'll let you guys know what they say. Thanks for the help so far.
