Default Just did a compression test

Hey guys. Yesterday, I did a compression test on my car to see if its in good shape to turbo this summer. I disengaged the fuel system by pulling the EFI fuse and performed the test right after getting the car up to normal driving temperture. Across the board I was at 145 psi in each cylinder give or take 2 or 3 psi. I am pretty sure that I am supposed to be at 180 psi for each. If this is the case I think I am in for an expensive fix. I am taking the car over to Ptuning on tuesday to have a leak down test done. I just wanted to know if anyone else has gotten these numbers and what they think about it. Thanks.

I think Chris did it on his and all his ring lands were broken... Same damage on mine but all at 180. At least you know they are broken in uniform

How much did it cost you to fix?

Like 1k but I built the motor. You could get a stock junkyard motor for like 450-1200

the absolute cheapest you can get out of this without sourcing pistons from ebay (lulz) will run about 800. thats roughly 400 for aftermarket pistons, 200 for full gasket set, 200 for balancing. This is severly cheaping out and this is assuming bearings are good, head bolts can be reused, you do all the work (red bull not included). These are two components that should be changed but if your lucky you can get by.

Ok. I don't want to cheap out if I have to rebuild anyway.

Well when I did the compression test I looked at the spark plugs and they were white which leads me to believe the car was running lean which could contribute to this. But I have never noticed a change in performance since I bought the car used. I am guessing I bought it this way. When I bought it it had brand new tires on the front and stock tires on the back and only had 15,000 miles on it. So its possible the previous owner beat the hell out of it. I rarely ever beat on the car. The car only has an intake and exhaust. Since the test though I have put the stock intake on to see if that fixes the lean issue

if your cars had the toyota 10yr/100,000 warantee would the "fix" be cover under warantee? I have such warantee and now i feel like runing out and getting a compression test

I took my car to Ptuning today to have a leak down test done and it turns out that my motor is fine and actually running very strong. I must have done something wrong when I did the test or maybe the gauge was not giving me good readings. Either way I'm stoked about not having to rebuild!

I'm glad for you! my car has the 10yr/100,000 warantee. Car has 80K on it and I still have either 20K or 5 yrs left.

I think when I get to 90K i'm going to get the test done, that way if there is anything wrong I can use the warantee and get everything replaced.

Thanks for the heads up. def something to keep in the back of my mind.

Thats such great news to hear. What does the average person need to perform the compression test? And how much does a pressure gauge cost to buy or rent? I watched a test being performed on my civic about 5 years back.

What more is involved in a "Leak Down" test?
