K&N CAI Street Legality
not that i want to discourage people from buying K&N, but there was some confusion about whether the kit was street legal or not:
Even though I don't own a tC... I decided to help you guys out (and b/c I was curious myself about K&N's own ratings). I emailed K&N a few weeks ago about this issue. I thought they forgot about me but they finally replied.
I'll reprint the email here:
ok so I'm pretty sure I followed their rules for reprinting the correspondence. Even though he didn't answer many of my questions... I'll read inbetween the lines. Since the tC intake is designated "off-road use only". My guess is that its not technically smog/street legal in ANY state yet. They may become smog legal in the future.
He didn't answer any other questions, but most likely the "no" answer under CARB EO for the xA means that its legal in all states but Cali. Whether its still undergoing CARB review or was denied is yet still unknown. Hdoes say "kits" though, so could it be that he meant the xA kit was not street legal either? hmmm

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in K&N products. At this time the kits are not smog legal in any state that performs an under hood inspection while doing a smog inspection. The kits have been submitted for approval however this process can take at times close to a year.
Thank you,

Subject: Legality of the Cold Air Intake for the Scion tC and xA
Hello,
I was just curious if you can provide any information on the legality of the cold air intake for the scion tC and xA.
On your website for the tC intake, under CARB exemption, it says "off-road use only."
Does this mean that it is not legal for street use in ANY state?
Will this status change in the future?
Have you or will you seek a CARB EO for the product?
Similiarly, for the xA, under CARB exemption, the website says "no".
Does this mean that a CARB EO is still pending? or that it was sought and denied?
If it helps the product no. for the tC intake is:
69-8607TB
and for the xA:
69-8606TB
Also one more thing about the tC intake, I noticed it comes in two pieces... can it be converted to a short ram intake system (for rainy days)?
thanks in advance for any help and for making such great products for our cars...

I think that's also why AEM doesn't "really" have anything for the tC yet.
But I think my question would be if this is the "emissions" testing that some counties do? Where the reply mentions the "smog inspection"? I know around some major cities they have to worry more about that, but there aren't any emissions tests near me.
I'll likely be waiting for the AEM one anyways, since that seems to be what Scion is going with (available on the xB for now).

No damn after market part is street legal it says it on the box from intake to exhaust to the freaking bulbs all that means is that if you live in CA your screwed and anywhere else they perform under the hood inspections, like NY, Hawaii, Ca, i live in chicago and took my eclipse with headers, cat back exhasut, intake and it passed as long as you CEl is not on your car will pass, but it migh be different in different staes and counties like he stated
Lol yeah i know but some parts are so by the book, just like some here in but some dont even care as long as ur car aint looking like a smoke house your okay and if your cell isnt on, but if it is disconnect the battery and run it for a awhile and see how long it takes to come back on, like that you get a time frame on how long it takes and you can take it before it turns back on way to beat the system
