Machining Stock Shifter Into Short Throw
I work at a welding fab shop and we have all the machining equipment to do just about anything. I'm interested in getting a short throw. I really like Dr.Isotope's setups just because of the drop in height and custominzing he offers. What I'm getting at is couldn't I just remove the stock shifting rod, cut it down, and rethread it at the top of the shift **** and have an effective short throw? Or am I missing so much that this doesn't make sense at all and would have no benefit at all. thanks in advance for you input

Well that's going to shorten the height, and effectively shorten the throw a little bit - but not properly, IMO.
Most of the short shifters out there involve a little bit of geometry to further reduce the throw with little to no height reduction (or more height reduction, as needed).

Reducing height, by simple geometry, does reduce throw. However, to shorten the throw a good amount you will have to reduce height to a point where you may not like the extra shift effort needed. The way to do it properly is to move the pivot ball on the shifter. Moving this up effectively moves the fulcrum and reduces throw. This way you can shorten to a more manageable point and still get a good 50% or so throw reduction without having exceedingly high shift effort.
