Mandrel vs. Crush bent exhausts
Just wanted to get some views from other tC owners on getting a custom exhaust done.
Its damn near impossible to find someone around who does mandrel bent exhausts. I guess what i wanted to know is really...whats the difference. i mean, I know crush bending is a LITTLE more restrictive, but seriously..is it REaLLY noticeable?
And what if I wanted to get a header, CAI, or even supercharger....would a cruch bend be TO restrictive at that point?
Or what if I just bought the TRD axel back and had a custom mid pipe added...
any opinions?

w00t...nevermind. i was asking because I couldnt find anyone who did mandrel bending, but I finally got ahold of the garage I was hoping to get ahold of. He DOES do a mandrel bending and even better...check this out...full cat system installed for 250.00.
Im so happy right now

i was explained this a few weeks ago so i could be wrong, but i was told that stainless steel and aluminum piping can only be mandrel bent because other wise it will kink, break or distort and will reducethe amount of air going through, which is the whole point behind after market exhuast in the first place!

I would double check on the mandrel bent aspect of that... That seems VERY Cheap for a mandrel bent system... Mandrel benders alone are close to 24K in price... Also for $250 it has to be aluminum.

Yea, ill definately talk more with him when I take it in on saturday to get a realistic qoute. Ive known the guy for years and hes ALWAYS been really fair and GOOD with his work. Whenever he had to do work on my cougar, which was often...he would show me his wholesale parts catalog to look thru so i could pick out what i could afford and at times, he would even shave some labor fees off of the bill.
Hes just a really really nice guy. Ill let you guys/girls know after saturday

Brandon:
I just looked and saw you were in camp hill pa.... Definitely triple check the mandrel bending cause to my knowledge there is only a handful of those machines on the east and i don't think one is in PA. Just a lil heads up

I just got off the phone again with the guy and I asked him if it was in fact a mandrel, and he said 'whats your definition of a mandrel? If youre wondering if theirs going to be kinks in the metal, then no....other machine leave a ripple effect on the of the tube, but not mine. Its a nice smooth bend that doesnt stretch the metal"
so perhaps its not a mandrel, but a good quality crush bend.
Oh and he doesnt use aluminum OR steel...just because neither are in high demand, he uses aluminized metal(s)...which is what all car manufacturers use and he has a 10 year gaurantee on the metal....so, either way, it still sounds like a pretty good deal.

Weird situation to me...
Mandrel Bending - The mandrel bending process maintains a constant inside diameter, even through pipe bends. Flow area remains consistent, increasing flow more than 35% compared to stock, serrated bent pipes.
