When you try to do it, the clutch seems to dis-engage itself, and your rpms fly up without the car actually accelerating.

If this describes you... then you either have a clutch issue, or a gear-popout issue. Both of which, are rare for a 14k mile car. You need to take it to the dealership for warranty work.

If it only happens in 5th, then you probably have a transmission issue that's beyond basic repair. Clutch issues happen under hard acceleration in all gears, particularly in the lower ones.
A slipping clutch will show up more in higher gear under load. When you gas it hard in high gear you are placing a lot of load on the clutch, especially in an overdrive gear. This is a common test for determining if a clutch is in good shape (when I look at a used car, I will put the car in 4th gear at about 20mph and drop the pedal. If it bogs, it is probably got good life left in the clutch, if it slips.. clutch is weak). So this would be perfectly normal for a worn out clutch. If he is able to let off and the rpm comes back down to match shaft speed, then it is not popping out of gear, the clutch is slipping.

The burning smell further backs the idea that it is a clutch slippage problem.

The dealer will not warranty a burned clutch unless they take it apart and find that the mechanism is at fault. If the master/slave cylinder is good and proper pressure is engaging the clutch, then the only other option is that it is being slipped (most likely riding the clutch too long while taking off ).

Even if your foot is off the clutch at 1000 rpm, if it takes you 5 seconds to get there every time, you are slipping the clutch and it will burn it up. Not saying you dont know how to drive, but this is the most common cause of a clutch burning up early.

But, as I mentioned, if the clutch is never engaging fully, that can be it as well. But the car needs to be checked out to determine that.

As far as being able to stop the wear, it is already a done deal. You can baby the car a lot and extend the life, but you are pretty much in for a new clutch if it is worn to the point of slipping.

If it is an engagement issue causing it and it is fixable, then you may have some life left in the clutch, but every time you hear it slip and smell it, it is taking life off of it. So chances are high either way that you need a new clutch.

Just take it in... I have burned up a clutch before, and it is almost exactly what you ahve described....except mine was so bad it did it in 1st...

Odds are it is a linkage. 14K is quick to kill a clutch. If it is your fault, might be a time to look at driving habits, and a better clutch.

good luck

It's a clutch issue. Either you've worn out your clutch, or the pressure plate is not being properly held against the flywheel.

The former will be most likely almost impossible to get warrantied. You cannot prove that you didn't burn it up racing or doing burnouts or whatever.

The latter would more than likely be warrantied. An issue with your hydraulic system (insufficient travel) could cause a similar problem.

Can we recommend some typing lessons too? What has the education system in this country come to? Seriously. You use one period and a capital letter to make a sentence. Come on. Glad to hear you got the car fixed.
