need help, got in trouble with popo
Last week I got pulled over on my way to church for a modified muffler. Court is forcing me to remove it, but doing so forces me to remove the whole catback on the bottom. It's a dual exhaust (welded to the catback), with megan racing headers, and i'm wondering if it's the headers thats making the tremendous amount of noise or the exhaust system.
I can't afford to swap both out for stock parts, so i'm thinking of just swapping the headers to stock, or swapping the exhaust for an SES injen exhaust system.
Here's a picture, so help would be greatly appreciated.

just put some silencers in them cans that might help .!
as for taking them off , cut them off at a straight piece of pipe go to popo station show them its off than go home reweld them back on and stick in the silencers that should considerably make your duals more quite.
dont go back to stock!

i already thought of that, but the court doesn't care if i get silencers on or not. if i get them removed for something else, the charges for that part of the ticket will get dropped. (i got two tickets in one sitting)
so i'm wondering what type of cans are quieter?
my pick as of right now is SES injen, but if there are any other suggestions please say so.
...plus i need to get a new bumper -_-

i don't know, but i can't afford to get caught again. 2nd offense they say will be a license suspension doubling the fine, even though it's worth no points. so if i take them off and replace them with something else now, i think it'll be better off in the long run. courts on the 26th
i call them coffee cans
and i'll look into magnaflow too. thanks.

I hate to be mean and I know everyone has there own style and taste but the set up itself in my opinion looks out of place which is no wonder why the police pulled you over. Best of luck to you whatever you may do
I don't know how loud your exhaust is, but if the ticket is for modified muffler, you're gong to have to remove your current setup unless you want to get more tickets. It's terribly obvious the exhaust is modified and all it's going to do is attract attention from law enforcement.
Coffee cans... fart cans, it doesn't matter. Cops don't like it if there is one on a car, much less two of them.

Are you getting fined for a dual exhaust? Modified exhaust? db violation? I know you are in NY but as far as I would say (what little it matters) it's my car I'll do what I want with my exhaust as long as I meet db and emissions requirements.
I found some answers. NY VAT Title 3, Sec. 375, Sub sec. 31
Basically, the law is written in such a way that the exhaust system cannot be louder than stock, but doesn't specifically prohibit modification.
No person shall modify the muffler or exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor or exhaust system of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler or exhaust system originally installed on the vehicle and such original muffler and exhaust system shall comply with all the requirements of this section.
I just got the same ticket yesterday and I live in ny but the cop told me if I get a certified inspection station to sign off on it that it is legal than it is ok and ticket will be dropped. He said my exhaust was to loud. What about harleys, what about tractor trailers, what about old cars that you have to custom make an exhaust system for???? that is sooo bogus. Too loud my a$$. Emissions laws are one thing but to loud is another that really gripes me. Its just another reason for theese pigs to pull people over to see if they are up to no good, just the same as dirty liscence plate or no liscence plate light. Dont these cops have anything better to do with their time like actually protect people or stop crime. I mean really who ever heard of anyone getting killed or hurt by a loud exhaust? This is just plain harassment and I for one dont want to stand for it. They can give me whatever tickets they like but I wont keep my mouth shut about it. I like expressing myself and my car is how I do that! So Ill play their game and take it to the inspection station and get my friends down there to sign off on it! But really this is unfair that they can continue to harass society in this manner.
modified/no exhaust was on the ticket. and i compared to harleys and other bikes... it's just as loud when going above 4,000rpm (it's a clean deep bass sound, nothing fartastic). i mean it wasn't a problem in jersey where i set everyting up, but i seriously didn't know ny would be a stickler about this.
my lawyer is saying to get em removed, my tech is saying to get quiet but equivalent aftermarket parts. this problem just got blown out of perspective cause of the 2nd part of the ticket. failin to comply to lawful order.
my lawyer is saying to sue the place where they did my job. they knew installing it would cause trouble, and they did it anyway without a second thoughts hesitation.
well i'm getting my car checked tomorrow by the local mech here, i'll post up the db levels and what not. courts two days before my birthday, maybe they'll let me off easy. i still have no points
in the daytime too, i had little middle school church kids in the back taking them to the cafeteria. but i really appreciate all the help and comments everyone posted. current headers with magnaflow, new bumper is the gameplan for now. (they did a terrible job cutting my left bumper)

with both silencers on it should be good, the court cant tell you to remove it if the state reff says noise is ok. the exhaust im sure is a T design wich is still legal. the reff will measure noise not looks, but headers your f***d for smog reasons. what i have issue is suing somebody for your action, man the F up and face your actions. i've been suspended 4 times and many years, its not fun but they are my actions, and to this day i pay to play.

2. Fire your lawyer, he is giving you bad advice. YOU have the sole responsibility of insuring your vehicle operates within the state law and ignorance of those laws are not an excuse. The shop's responsibility is to take your money and insure you don't die because of their work... that's it; they have no liability.
You're doing the right thing by removing the duals... and IMO it will look a lot better.
Go with the Injen SES if you're going to replace the exhaust, which you should do. IMO angled exhausts look ricey, and dual angled exhausts is just dual ricey. :\
Also, it's illegal for you to have a modified exhaust, but I don't think it's illegal for a shop to install a modified exhaust... especially since, if I read this right, you got it done in a different state anyway.
