Default Noise Post-Pulley Install

I recently installed the Underdrive Crank Pulley, Overdrive Alternator Pulley, and Light weight Water Pump Pulley with the recommended belt from the NST website; and now I am hearing this whining sound that elevates as RPM goes up.

I didn't have access to pneumatic tools, so everything was done with hand tools except after wasting a lot of time trying to get the alternator pulley off I took it to a shop where they probably used an impact wrench. I couldn't fit a torque wrench in the wheel well to measure how much torque I was applying to the crank pulley. I used strap wrenches to hold the pulleys in place and tighten as much as I could.

-The belt is aligned
-The tension seems to be sufficient
-There's no noticeable smell, or visible wear

Does anybody have pulleys and experience this whining?

I had this noise when I put on my underdrive-crank pulley and it went away after a few revs. I believe it may be it just settling in and everything. Well thats what mine was, make sure they all line up well and just re-check everything you can.

Incorrect belt, I'm practically 100% sure.

you should of had just payed someone to install the crank for you that had air tools or rented a torque ratchet that fits because with basic hand tools you won't be able to torque it down to the factory specs or you could over tighten it as well. it could be that your crank is loose and wobbling making that noise you are hearing, how bad is the noise and how long have you been running the car like that?

Hmmm... From a visual inspection, none of the pulleys are wobbling. I installed my pulleys on the 20th.

I initially had no doubt that the belt was incorrect since it was pretty tough to get the belt on, but when I was adjusting the belt to align correctly (a couple days ago) there seemed to be much more slack than during install.

I guess I'm going to try and get a hold of a compressor and an impact wrench and see if that does anything, but at this point I don't believe it's due to bolts being loose.

Thanks for the replies guys!

The belt was the issue for me when I installed the pulley kit. It made noise and over time squealed to high heaven. It was then that I realized NST doesn't know which belt to use for their own products. Thus is also evident in their review thread where people who upgrade 3 pulleys are stuck trying to figure out which belt works. Even though it may seem snug, that doesn't mean its the correct belt. GL!

Any suggestions for the correct belt size? I'm using the K060739 suggested on their website on my 2010 tC at the moment.

Definitely feels quicker through out the power band. Improved throttle response and smoother shifts. I'm just trying to rid myself of this supercharger-esque whining. I'm going to try a different belt and do some negotiating with someone I know that has air tools later this week.

i guess alot of you are running the underdrive pulley which is smaller than the OEM size, i've been running the NST water-pump and 20%alternator pulleys with the HOB crank from fastscions and haven't had any problems with the factor belt since i got them. a kid i know with the S/C bought the NST oem size crank pulley and 9psi pulley and was able to use the belt that came with the S/C and hasn't had a problem as well. not sure what the rest are doing that can't seem to use factory belt.

The underdrive pulley from NST requires the use of a 6 rib belt versus the 7 rib factory belt.

Just an update to bring some closure to this thread. All pulleys were spinning true and the whine was primarily from the crank which led me to assume slippage. I went to Advance Auto and got some new belts to test out. The 6-rib 735 belt I replaced the 6-rib 739 belt with eliminated the whining, so it was in fact slippage that I was experiencing. I wouldn't think much difference from 07-09 versus a 2010 which I have, but maybe, just maybe, it made a difference in recommended belt size.

I read the whole comprehensive thread and followed the DIY thread to install prior to posting for help. Thank you to everybody that posted here and helped me solve my annoying problem.

that's good that you fixed it, i do know that the 05-06 belt won't fit the 07+ because i had my belt snap and autozone only carried the 05-06 at the moment and it was a little bit longer..
