Default NST Pullies... Good Info!

Well guys, I was at work when I thought to myself, people would love to know what the weights of the NST pulleys are. I know there are other topics on this and that the NST website gives the weights of the pulleys, but I was bored and wanted something to do. The electronic scale says different from the website. So with out prolonging the inevitable here are the pics.

This scale is used primarily for weighing mail and packages. It should be real close to exact weights since I zeroed the scale each time before weighing the pulleys. I hope this satisfies someone, it surely satisfied me.

Sorry... Here's a comparison from WeDriveScions write up on a DIY.

On the topic of underdrive pulleys (and sorry if i'm hijacking the thread), but doesn't using a 20 % overdrive alternator pulley with a 15% underdrive crank pulley defeat the purpose of get the underdrive pulley by 5%? All the rotational force that is gained at the crank is just lost at the alternator pulley... or is there a really good explaination for why thats not true? Just wondering cause I want a lighter pulley and i'd like to get the underdrive on, but living in SoCal means cranking the a/c allllll the time and I don't want to put any additional stress on the system. So... yea i'm long winded in asking a simple question, so i'll rephrase: Does adding a 20% overdrive alternator pulley help or worsen the effects of a 15% underdrive pulley? Thanks

mmm no because its all proportional... a 20% increase in circumfrence of an overdrive altnernator pulley is a much much smaller number than the number from a 15% decrease in the circumfrence of a crank pulley. More surface area inevitably equals more mass as long as the same material is used. Now throw in the fact that its a lighter alloy being used to make these pulleys and they're not 100% solid you are losing even more mass equating to less rotational mass

I'm no expert but if you need any help the guys at NST are usually on AIM. So if you have any questions you should talk to them. Here is there AIM: NSTonAIM. Hope they can help you out.

a overdrive alternator pulley weighs less than the factory alternator pulley by substantial amounts because of the above statement and the crank pulley your losing 35 oz because of a smaller size and lighter alloy and its not 100% solid, because of a lighter alloy in the alternator pulley you're losing 7.1 oz... size is part but materials is another huge part to mass so all in all YES you're losing a MINUTE amount of power to the overdriven alternator pulley but its still lighter than factory by more than 50% as is the crank pulley so even with the small amount of loss because of the overdrive its still lighter than stock so it still creates more whp

Is there any advantage to getting this for an auto, as I drive an 07 auto. Just wondering.

I do not think you just want to do this mod alone. I would do the header and the pulley combo also. You need things to work together to get a power benefit (both mentally and physically). I think if you take my word in this respect you will be happy in the long run.

Yea i still plan on doing the header.. but i see the advantages stacking in favor of the pullies more than the header for right now (money forces prioritization :\... ) But until i pay off my upcoming insurance I have time to decide whether i want to do these small mods or just save it all for a sc

^ I see where you are comming from but I think you will not be happy enough by just doing the pulley upgrade. But let me know how things go when you make your choice.
